Villarreal vs Manchester United Champions League 08-09 Updates

Manchester United takes on Spanish club Villarreal at the Estadio El Madrigal, Villarreal, in an important Group E match of Champions League on 25 November 2008. Both teams can ensure their qualification for the round of 16 thanks to a draw in the match as they already have 8 points to their credit from previous 4 matches. Another point from the match would see both Manchester United and Villarreal going into the knock out stage. There is another thing I found similar in both the teams is there very recent form. Manchester United drew with Aston Villa on the road last night, while Villarreal was handed their first league defeat by Valladolid at home on the same day.

Match: Villarreal vs Manchester United; Group E, UEFA Champions League 2008-09

Date: 25 November 2008, Tuesday

Venue: Estadio El Madrigal, Villarreal

Kick off: 19:45 BST (British Standard Time)

With 25 points from 13 outings, Manchester United secures third position in the league table, despite last night’s goalless draw at Aston Villa. The good thing for Manchester United is that they have come out of their shaky form that they showed initially in the season. They are leading the Group E point table of Champions League with 8 points from 4 outings thanks to 2 wins and 2 draws. In the last Champions League fixture, Manchester United drew with Celtic on the road. Sir Alex Ferguson will miss two of his top guns: Dimitar Berbatov and Wes Brown, for the match against Villarreal.

Telegraph reported:

Berbatov, who suffered a hamstring injury during an international friendly against Serbia on Wednesday in Belgrade, is also unlikely to figure in Ferguson’s plans in their Champions League group game against Villarreal next week.

Meanwhile, defender Brown has had an exploratory ankle operation and is likely to be sidelined until Christmas.

A disappointed Ferguson added: “He’ll be missing for a few weeks now. No time-scale on it, but I would have thought maybe four weeks, maybe five weeks.”

Villarreal also stands third in their domestic league table with 25 points from 12 matches including 7 wins, 4 draws and the only defeat to Real Valladolid. Villarreal has equal 8 points of Manchester United in Group E of Champions League, but they secure the second place on goal difference. Villarreal drew with Danish club Aalborg BK on the road in their last match in Europe. Villarreal will be looking to mount on the goalless draw they managed against Manchester United at Old Trafford earlier in September. Like Manchester United, Villarreal will also miss two important players: defender Diego Godin and striker Joseba Llorente due to injury.

Sky Sports reported:

Godin suffered a muscle blow to his left leg while playing for Uruguay against France on Wednesday and needs a minimum of two weeks to recuperate.

Meanwhile Llorente is set to be sidelined for around a month with a torn thigh muscle sustained in Sunday's 2-2 draw against Malaga.

Villarreal is a strong side at home, even though they suffered their only league defeat so far this season at home. I think, Manchester United may not find Villarreal easier to break than Aston Villa. Following the recent home defeat, Villarreal will look to refurbish their home pride against Manchester United with a victory, while Manchester United will not mind coming out with a point from the match in what would ensure one of the last 16 spots for Manchester United. However, to achieve a point against Villarreal, Manchester United players need to be up to the mark. So, I guess, there could be an exciting match between Villarreal and Manchester United with both sides looking to achieve a spot in the knock out stage of Champions League.
