Portsmouth midfielder Lassana Diarra will not be able to take part in the Community Shield 2008 match against Manchester United. The French international is running out of fitness as he joined late to the pre-season training. Portsmouth manager Joe Jordan did not hide anything about the issue, stating that Diarra needs about a week to regain his fitness, but he is out of contention for the FA Community Shield meeting with Manchester United.
Diarra joined Portsmouth in a move from Arsenal in January 2008. Portsmouth’s Croatian winger Niko Kranjcar also joined pre-season training late after his international duty with Croatia in Euro 2008. Portsmouth won the FA Cup title last season and thus achieved the ticket of FA Community Shield 2008. However, Manchester United is interested to use the match to boost up the match fitness of some of their players, ahead of the premier league 2008-2009 season, starting from 16 August.
