Italian Captain Fabio Cannavaro Ruled out of Euro 2008 with Knee Injury

Italy world cup winning Captain Fabio Cannavaro is out of Euro 2008 competition with a serious injury he sustained during a training session. The Italian centre back took a blow to his knee after a clash with fellow centre back Giorgio Chiellini. Following the incident, Cannavaro was rushed to the hospital. Finally the bad news came after the tests had confirmed it is a serious injury and he might undergo surgery. However, Italian FA confirmed that the Real Madrid player is going to miss out Euro 2008 tournament. Detailed information about his injury will come out after conducting a few more tests in the next couple of days. Coach Roberto Donadoni will announce replacement of Fabio Cannavaro for the tournament, due to begin from 7 June. Fiorentina defender Alessandro Gamberini is expected to be the most likely replacement of Cannavaro.

So, it is bad news for Italy fans. Italy won the 2006 FIFA World Cup and Fabio Cannavaro played excellently well throughout the tournament, leading the Azzuris to their fourth world cup title. So, missing a player like him ahead of such a major tournament is definitely a big blow for any team. However, the good thing is that Italy’s current form is good and most of the players have impressive form of late. So, Italy has the ability to cope up with well, even without their influential Captain Fabio Cannavaro. Now, let us see if Italian defense shows the same resistance it showed during the last world cup.
