Euro 2008: Spain Reached Quarter Final Defeating Sweden 2-1

Two goals from striker Fernando Torres and David Villa ensured Spain a place in the quarter final of Euro 2008 last night. Villa’s fourth goal in two matches came at the time when fans of both sides were mentally prepared for a 1-1 draw at Innsbruck, Austria. Striker Fernando Torres scored the first goal for Spain in the match.

With this victory, Spain accumulated six points from the first two matches and it was enough to book a place in the last eight of Euro 2008. Spain started the tournament with a 4-1 victory over Russia in the first match in which, striker David Villa scored the first hat trick of the tournament. The striker has four goals from two matches to his credit and he is currently on the race of becoming the highest goal scorer of the tournament. He might also break the record of Patrick Kluivert’s highest six goals in a Euro tournament. The Dutch striker achieved this success eight years back in Euro 2000 tournament.

For Sweden, they have to defeat Russia in the last group stage match to ensure a berth in the last eight. On the other hand, Spain’s last group stage match against Greece has now become a formality. So, Spain coach might bring on some reserve players in the starting line up against Greece providing rest to some of the regular players of the squad.
