Euro 2008: Spain Made a Good Start with an Easy Victory over Russia

Spain began their Euro 2008 campaign with an excellent 4-1 victory over Russia today in the first match of Group D as Spanish striker David Villa scored the first hattrick of Euro 2008. The Valencia striker was excellent throughout the match looking for creating chances in the match. Spanish defense was also up to the mark and Russia could not appear as a threat to the Spanish defense.

David Villa opened scoring for Spain in the 20th minute of the first half sending the ball into the open net, before scoring the second goal at the 44th minute of the first match. So, Spain was leading by two goals at the half time. In the second half, David Villa was picked out by a pass from Fabregas and Villa convincingly sent the ball past Russian goal keeper into the left corner of the net. Going down by three goal, Russia got a consolation goal thanks to Pavlechenko at the 86th minute. Substitute midfielder Cesc Fabregas increased the winning margin with his first international goal in the injury time.

Russia was not up to the mark. Specially, their defense could not show enough resistance against Spain. With this victory, Spain is now a bit closure to secure a place in the quarter final of Euro 2008. On the other hand, Russia would now find it very difficult to bounce back and make it to the last eight of the tournament. For that, Russian defense must be back at their prime before they face Greece in the next match.
