Maria Sharapova Reaches the Second Round of Australian Open 2008

Maria Sharapova has made an easy land in the first round of Australian Open 2008 today. The world no. 5 has defeated Jelena Kostanic Tosic of Croatia 6-4, 6-3 in her way to reach the second round of Australian Open 2008. Sharapova started off well winning two back to back games in the first set. However, the Russian faced some strong challenges in the second round when Jelena Kostanic Tosic tried to bounce back in the match making it 3-3 at one stage. However, Maria Sharapova did not have too much problem to claim the match in two direct sets. Sharapova fired some aces which eased her task in the match.

Xinhuanet reported:

"I played a pretty tricky opponent, someone that I haven't played in a while. The last couple matches that I played in Asia were against pretty big-hitting girls. So she was definitely a trickier opponent. You don't see too many of those around these days." said Sharapova after the match.

Now, Maria Sharapova has to think about a trickier opponent, Lindsay Davenport, whom she is going to face to in the second round. Davenport has made a strong comeback in the tennis court seven months after giving birth a baby. The former world no. 1 has defeated Chan Yung-jan in the first round today and confirmed an exciting second round tie with Maria Sharapova. Maria Sharapova was not that much successful last year without any grand slam title. So, the last year’s Australian Open finalist must try her best to beat Davenport in the second round match.
