Maria Sharapova Advanced into the Fourth Round of Australian Open 2008

Maria Sharapova seems to be increasing her game with her advancement continues in Australian Open 2007. The Russian star defeated countrywomen Elena Vesnina 6-3, 6-0 in the third round match on Friday. Earlier, Maria Sharapova defeated Lindsay Davenport with similar ease in the second round. Actually, Sharapova played looked so comfortable against Elena Vesnina that it seemed to be a first round match. The world no 5 was excellent in her forehand shots.

The Hindu reported:

If the former world No.1, now world ranked No.5, brought her A game to the court against another former world No.1, Lindsay Davenport, the other night, then Sharapova was surely not going to make the mistake of taking a lightweight opponent lightly on Friday.

Playing her countrywoman Elena Vesnina, Sharapova took about half an hour to settle down. Once she did come through the tough early phase, the most marketable woman athlete in the world dominated the exchanges against a player ranked 50 places below her to win the third round match 6-3, 6-0.

Maria Sharapova now plays 11th seed fellow Russian, Elena Dementieva in the her last hurdle to set up a mouth watering probable clash with Justine Henin in the quarter final. Dementieva has been in impressive form. So, it would not be so easy for Maria Sharapova to clinch the victory.
