Australian Open 2008: Promising to Present an Exciting Tournament

Australian Open 2008 will kick off from 14 January. The tournament is going to be a tough one as all 32 top Women’s seeds and 30 of the top 32 Men’s seeds are going to take part in the competition. Players are eager to take part in the first grand slam of the year. Among the Men’s top 32 seeds, Tommy Haas (GER) and Guillermo Canas (ARG) will not take part in the competition due to their injury problem.

The top seeded players have been announced recently. Defending Australian Open champion Roger Federer tops the list followed by Rafael Nadal, Novak Đoković, Nikolay Davydenko and David Ferrer in the top five. Among the Women’s seeds, Justine Henin leads the list with Svetlana Kuznetsova, Jelena Jankovic, Ana Ivanović and Maria Sharapova occupying second to fifth places respectively.

Women’s singles defending champion Serena Williams is seeded no. 7 and she is also one of the most favorites to win the title of this year. Maria Sharapova was the runner up last time and Henin was absent in 2007 due to his personal problems. All of them are favorites to win the title of Australian Open 2008.

In Men’s singles, Roger Federer is the ultimate favorite with Rafael Nadal, Novak Đoković are likely to pose some threats to this Swiss.
