Zimbabwe projected the first upset of Twenty20 world cup 2007 defeated Australia by five wickets. Undoubtedly, it will be a memorable day for Zimbabwe and their fans. World Champion Australia is regarded as the tournament favorite. So, Zimbabwe now has the chance to progress to the Super weight round of this world cup.
Wining the toss Australian captain Ricky Ponting choose to bat first. However, except Andrew Symonds and Brad Hodge none of the Australian batsmen could show any resistant against the young Zimbabwean bowlers. Symonds scored 33 and Hodge could 35 runs. Six Australian batsmen got out before reaching at 10. So, Elton Chigumbura took 3 wickets for Zimbabwe. Australia could score 138 runs after the end of 20 overs.
Chasing 139 runs, Zimbabwean batsmen were confident form the very beginning. Their opening batsmen Brendan Taylor guided Zimbabwe to reach at 139. Brendan Taylor scored unbeaten 60 runs facing just 45 balls. So, it is naturally a memorable day for Brendan Taylor and his teammates. So, they now look at the super right round.
Zimbabwe’s performance in world cricket was really very poor in the last few years. Many of their former cricketers have left the team because of their dispute with board. So, Zimbabwe has kept them out of the test arena for the last few years. Now, Zimbabwe can think of super eight stage as they have the chance to qualify for the super eight round.
Just a few days ago their former Captain Tatenda Taibu came back to his country and joined the team. So, Zimbabwean fans were hopeful to see some special performance from Zimbabwe in Twenty20 world cup. So, I guess, Zimbabwean fans are now celebrating such a memorable win of their team which they could not do for a long time.
For Australia, it will be harder to qualify for the super eight round. As they have only one match against England. Australia has to win the match against England if they want to keep their last hope alive. Even the win over England can not give any assurance that they will enter into the super eight round.
On the other hand, for Zimbabwe, it has become easier for them to get into the super eight round of Twenty20 world cup 2007. If they can win over England then they will reach at the super eight being the B group champion. However, even if they lose against England they will still have possibility to qualify for the super eight stage. Now, let us see how far Zimbabwe can go after causing the biggest upset of Twenty20 cricket.
