Yan Zi goes to the semifnal of Rogers Cup

Chinese Tennis star, Yan Zi, moved to the semifinals of the Rogers cup.Currently, she is 169th position in WTA ranking. She will face Justine Henin in the semifinals. The Star.com reports:

The last time a qualifier made it to the semifinals in this tournament was 1996, when Kimberly Po of the United States defeated Mary Joe Fernandez 6-2, 6-3 in a quarter-final match.

Yan will be on centre court in the semifinals to face Justine Henin, the top seed and the world No.1.

Henin will be the overwhelming favorite after having disposed of Russian Nadia Petrova, the sixth seed, 7-6, 6-3 in cold, blustery conditions Friday night. Henin found herself down 0-3 and 3-5 in the first set, but rallied with some smart shots.

“I just tried to keep fighting,” said Henin.

Henin moved into the semifinals beating Russia’s Nadia Petrova. The day was not meant for Petrova. She lost control in the second set. The two met thirteen times on the court. Including this one Henin beat Petrova eleven times.

Yan is the first qualifier to reach the semifinals in the last 11 years. In 1996, it was Kimberly Po from USA, who made it to the semifinals beating Mary Joe Fernandez.
