It was a day to nibble and then pretend to be full for most golfers. The 2007 Masters opened with gusty winds and greens as firm as a kitchen floor. Only nine golfers finished under par, and everyone who shot slightly above par seemed content to remain in contention.
But Singh acted like he had touched a rainbow. He shot an even-par 72, which on this day qualified as brilliant. He finished one stroke better than Tiger Woods and four better than defending champion Phil Mickelson.
