You should really take a writing course, it's a sad day when the momentous list you tried to compile does absolute shame in the fact that you can't even put words in their proper context. Anyone on your list would be embarrassed by the lack of coherence in your articles!

Let's talk semantics: Seles surely has the most impressive and devastating groundies of all time. Men or women. Unfortunately, she doesn't make the top 5 short list due to some hater named Gunther Parche : /

Maybe someday someone else will come along who deserves to knock Margaret Smith or BJK off this list. But I don't see that happening. Careers are too short nowadays. I guess if Serena can get to 12 or 14 Slams. . . we'll start talkin?

Put aside the "modern era" as a cutoff; its a silly way of breaking up tennis history. One can see without the labeling of amateur or professional who stood out.

    Men -
    1-Federer*
    2-Sampras
    3-Gonzales
    4-Laver
    5-Tilden
    Women -
    1-Navratolova
    2-Margaret Court
    3-Chris Evert
    4-Seles* (else Billie Jean)
    5-Graf

    The asterisks refer to:
Federer winning the French open more than once as well as continuing to win and maintain dominance on par with Sampras' career. Seles is given a bye on longevity on account of the stabbing incident. Seles had the game, stamina, smarts and determination to be the greatest of all time. One can argue that the incident revealed a weak underbellie that would have sooner than later doomed her career. Maybe I'm being too kind to Gonzales and if so I would put Laver above him. But putting aside eras, technology, better fitness regimes, the two players I would put up against Federer are Gonzales and Sampras. Sampras at the peak of his career and serve & volley game, would have had a distinct edge over Federer. Likewise with Gonzales. As a natural talent Gonzales is an equal to Federer but Roger simply has the best mental attitude on the court I've seen in the great players. Navratilova had all the best characteristics except being a natural on the order of Federer. I'd give that label to Hingis. I would have loved to see Seles and Hingis complete long careers!

Graf is definitely NOT #1. She benefited immensely from the unfortunate Seles incident.

She was named most overrated tennis player in history by SI in 2001.

Seles could have been the greatest.

5 greatest women players of all time:

    1. Navratilova
    2. Seles
    3. Court
    4. Graf
    5. King

to leave evert off the best 5 female players of all time is ridiculous. she won 18 GS titles even though she missed key French and Aussie Opens at her peak. She was the picture of consistency, winning at least 1 GS every year for 13 yrs, made the SF of all but 4 of her 56 GS appearances and won 90% of her matches (highest in Open era, male or female). plus she played against the best competitors: king and smith court is the beginning, then goolagong, then navratilova and graf and seles in the end.

My picks: 1) graf, 2) navratilova, 3) evert, 4) smith court and 5) king.

Seles close but not in top 5 because the horrible stabbing incident cut into domination at the peak of her career and, other than the 1 Aussie win, she was never the same after she returned. you have to analyze what a player did, not what could have beens. what if other players played the aussie open before the early 80's -- maybe court would have not won 11? what if laver had been allowed to play grand slams between '62 and '69 when he won all 4 each year?

The comments on this list are hilarious. Everyone's complaining at the choices without reading the title, i.e., the classification that governs the construction of the list. As another anonymous has said: THIS IS A LIST OF U.S. TENNIS PLAYERS; unless your point Manny is that Federer is SO amazing that he should even rank second on a list of the greatest American male tennis players of all time, even though he's Swiss. In fact, Federer, I agree. He just made my list of the top ten British prime ministers of all time, my list of top ten cheeses of all time, and my list of top 15 boy band managers. He's so incredible! He defies logic!

  11. while recognizing this is an article about US tennis greats, I need to respond to some of the comments here. Laver is #1 without question. He won a grand slam in one year as an amateur and won another as a pro as soon as he was able to. He spent a portion of his career in exile when he wasn't able to participate in the Grand slam title events. If he was able to, he surely would have won more.
