Michael Ballack Doubtful for Euro 2008 Final against Spain

You already know that David Villa of Spain has been ruled out of the final match against Germany with thigh injury. That is really the bad news for the supporters of Spain. Now, another bad news has arrived, but it is for the Germans. Their in-form Captain Michael Ballack is now doubtful for final showdown with Spain on Sunday. The midfielder missed Germany’s practice session with a calf injury on Saturday. Ballack suffered an injury on his right calf on Friday and he is now undergoing treatment. However, it is not yet confirmed if the star player would be fit in time for the final match against Spain. The coach Joachim Loew could not indicate anything hopeful.

Michael Ballack also missed the final match of 2002 World Cup final against Brazil due to suspestion. Germany lost the match to Brazil and failed to win the title of the tournament. So, if he misses the final of Euro 2008, it would be a big blow for German side. Meanwhile, Spain will miss their inform striker David Villa, who is currently the highest goal scorer with four goals in the tournament, as he is yet to recover from his thigh injury. Now, let us see if Ballack can become fit in time and take part in the final.

Germany or Spain: Who Will Win in Euro 2008 Final?

This is the question now going on in the minds of millions of people not only just in Germany and Spain but also in many countries around the world. Both of the teams have played very impressively in Euro 2008 so far. I think that Spain is a bit ahead in this regard. You German fans don’t get angry with me. Spain did not lose any match in Euro 2008 and won all their matches. Spain even overcame their shock of tie breakers by defeating Italy in a penalty shootout in the quarter final. Spain thrashed Russia in the semi finals yesterday by 3-0.

On the other hand, Germany lost to Croatia in the group stage. Germany did not win very convincingly against Turkey in the semi final. So, I think that Spain is the favorite to win the match. Well, my mind is divided about this issue. I also think that Germany is the favorite because in major competitions like World Cup and Euro, Germany always does better than most countries in the world.

So, who is your favorite team? Will it be Germany or Spain?

Joachim Low Impressed at the Postive Reaction of Torsten Frings

There is only one match left before the football world get to know the champion of Euro 2008. You already know that Germany and Spain will face each other in the final match of the tournament at the Ernst Happel Stadion, Vienna in Austria. No doubt, the match is very inviting and fans of the football world are eagerly waiting for the one last encounter of Euro 2008. Now, ahead of the match, German Coach Joachim Low is very much satisfied with midfielder Torsten Frings because of the player’s positive reaction even after being failed to make it the starting line up of Germany in their 3-2 victory over Turkey. Frings was injured out for Germany’s quarter final encounter with Portugal, and Simon Rolfes and Thomas Hitzlsperger came on in the starting line up and impressed the coach with their inspirational performance which left Joachim Low in a trouble to choose between Frings and Simon Rolfes- Thomas Hitzlsperger for the match against Turkey in the semi final.

The coach did not like to break the winning combination leaving Frings out of the starting line up, even though he had already recovered from the injury before the Turkey match. However, the coach was happy with Frings as he did not show any negative reaction being left out of the starting line up.

Sky Sports reported:

"He was very disappointed when I told him but later he came and knocked on my door and said he would have made exactly the same decision if he'd been the coach," said Low.

"It showed just how big a player he is - what a leader he is. It was a classy reaction."

Frings came on the field against Turkey in the 46th minutes in place of Simon Rolfes. It is apparent that Low is very much satisfied with the approach of Frings. Now, the question is that if Frings will again be left out of the starting line up. Let us just wait and see.

Euro 2008: Germany and Spain in Final

Germany and Spain will face each other in the final of Euro 2008. The whole football world is not waiting for this match with the hope of experiencing a classic match at the Ernst Happel Stadion in Vienna on 29 June 2008. Both the sides were among the favorites of the tournament though there were many who were skeptical regarding their success. Spain has been tagged as Europe’s biggest underachieved team due to their continuous failure in major tournaments, despite always being considered as one of the tournament favorites. On the other hand, Germany was one of the most favorite in the tournament considering their balanced squad, but their defeat to Croatia in the group stage came as a shock to their fans. However, Germany has come out of that patch after winning three back to back matches, the last two being against Portugal and Turkey in the quarter final and semi final.

Now, the question is who are going to win the final and lift the title of the tournament. You can come to the conclusion from different point of view, but when it comes to a final match of such a big competition and the two participating teams are like Germany and Spain, it is unfair to pick up a favorite. Germany is balanced side, while Spain has enough talent in the squad. So, you can really expect a classic match in the final of the tournament.

Who will be in the Final of Euro 2008?

As you know that there are three matches left in Euro 2008 tournament. Tonight in the first semi final Germany and Turkey will face each other, while Russia will take on Spain tomorrow in the second semi final of the tournament. There is no doubt that before the tournament kicked off, there was hardly anyone who could even dream of seeing Turkey and Russia in the last four of the tournament. From this point of view, football fans have already experienced enough surprise in the tournament so far. The question here comes is that if surprises will be stopped at this level of the tournament or continue till the end of the tournament. For both Turkey and Russia, this is their first semi final appearance.

Now, there are many questions around the tournament: will any new team win the European Champions this time as Greece did it four years back in 2004, or will Spain be able to regain their second Euro title after 44 years, or will Germany be able to claim their fourth European Championship title? The answers of all the questions will be available on 29 June 2008. I think, if Spain can stave off the challenge of Russia, they do really have a good chance to taste another European Championship title. On the other hand, Germany has a long tradition of winning titles silently in the major football tournaments, even without being at their prime some times. As a team Turkey’s main strength lies in their team unity and mental toughness. So, I would not be surprised if they could at least make it to the final of Euro 2008 tournament. For Russia, I think, they have played a big role in making the tournament as exciting as it has been. So, at this moment, I think, Euro 2008 is still very open and I would not write off any team at this stage of the tournament. Let us just hope to see three classic matches in the tournament in what it could be the best ever Euro tournament, the claim which has already been raised in the media.

Euro 2008: Germany Reached Semi Final after Defeating Portugal 3-2

Germany reached the semi final of Euro 2008 after defeating tournament favorite Portugal 3-2 in an entertaining quarter final match tonight at the St. Jakob-Park, Basel in Switzerland. From the very beginning both the sides went for attack and created many chances throughout the match. Bastian Schweinsteiger was the key player for Germany as he opened scoring for Germany and later on set up two more goals to clinch the victory. In the 22nd minute, Schweinsteiger put Germany ahead in the match with a superb finish. Lukas Podolski sent a cross in the box from the left and Schweinsteiger just tapped it into the net leaving Portuguese goal keeper Ricardo unmoved.

Just four minutes after the first goal, Germany doubled their lead thanks to Miroslav Klose. Klose headed a Schweinsteiger free kick to sent the ball past the goal keeper Ricardo. Captain Nuno Gomes decrease the difference by a 40th minute goal. Cristiano Ronaldo’s shot was deflected by German goal keeper Lehmann before falling in the path Nuno Gomes who successfully sent the ball into the net. Both the sides created some other good chances but failed to capitalize on those chances.

In the second half, Portugal looked more attacking. Pepe missed one of the easy chances of Portugal, heading the ball over the bar standing in a mix-up in the box. Then in the 61st minutes, German captain Michael Ballack scored the third goal for Germany that changed the whole situation and to some extent, the goal broke the hearts of the Portuguese players who were in their quest to level the score. Portugal then needed two more goals to level the score in just half an hour time. Before the final whistle in the match, Helder Postiga lit Portugal’s light of hope for the last time by scoring through a header in the 87th minute. However, Germany could hold on their lead and ensured a place in the semi final of Euro 2008. Germany will face the winner of the quarter final match between Croatia and Turkey.

Euro 2008: Italy Spain Match Live Updates

In the quarter final match of Euro 2008, Netherlands and Russia are going to take on each other on 21 June 2008 at the St. Jakob-Park, Basel in Switzerland. Both the teams showed some of their top form during their group stage matches. Netherlands progressed to the quarter final with hundred percent winning record as the Group C winner. Russia recorded an emphatic 2-0 victory over Sweden in their last group match. So, both the teams are now full of confidence and are looking to continue their impressive form in the third quarter final of the tournament.

Match: Netherlands vs Russia, Third Quarter Final, Euro 2008
Date: 21 June 2008, Saturday
Venue: St. Jakob-Park, Basel in Switzerland

Netherlands vs Russia: Road to Quarter Final

Netherlands started the tournament with an excellent 3-0 victory over Italy in the opening match of the tournament. Throughout the match Netherlands played excellently well. The Dutch side continued their top form against France as well by defeating the world cup runner ups 4-1. With two victories in the first two matches ensured their place in the quarter final that led Coach Marco van Basten to play a second-string side in the last match against Romania. However, that did not mar their performance as Netherlands defeated Romania 2-0 keeping hundred percent winning record in the group stage. Netherlands progressed to the quarter final of Euro 2008 as the winner of Group C.

Russia did not have a good start in the tournament as they suffered a 1-4 defeat to Spain in the first match. However, Russia bounced back in the second match defeating the defending champion Greece 1-0. With that victory, they kept their quarter final hope alive but they required a victory against Russia in the last group stage match against a strong Sweden. Guss Hiddink boys recorded a superb 2-0 victory over Sweden, which could have been four or five goals victory if Russian players could capitalize their chances. The way they outclassed Sweden must boost up their confidence level ahead of the match against Netherlands. Russia got into the quarter final of the competition as the Group D runner up.

Netherlands vs Russia: Head to Head and Recent Form

The two teams faced each other once so far. Last year, in a friendly match, Dutch side defeated Russia 4-1 and that has been the only meeting between the two sides so far. However, it is for sure that Netherlands has no chance to relax considering that big margin victory of last year because they are expected to see a different Russia side in the quarter final. This time, Russia will defiantly look to take the revenge of that defeat.

Netherlands looks formidable when it comes to recent form. In fact, the Dutch won six out of their last seven matches in all competition. The other match was draw. Russia, on the other hand, won five out of their last seven matches against two defeats in all competition. However, I think, the recent performance of the two teams do not have much to do with this match.

Marco van Basten Unhappy with New Turf on St Jakob Park in Basle

Netherlands coach Marco van Basten is not happy with the new pitch of St Jakob Park in Basle. Netherlands vs Russia quarter final match is going to take place on this new turf of St Jakob Park. The organizers are claiming that the new turf will be ready by the time two sides take on each other. The previous turf was heavily damaged during the previous two matches due to heavy rain. Having seen the damaged turf, UEFA decided to replace the turf with a new one at a cost of €200,000 (about £158,000). However, Marco van Basten questioned the decision of changing turf.

Timesonline reported:

Marco van Basten, the Holland coach, whose side will meet Sweden or Russia in the third quarter-final in Basle on Saturday, was surprised by the decision to replace the turf. “They seem to be replacing pitches quite easily these days, but look at what happened in the Champions League final when they put in a new pitch just before the game and the players were sliding on it,” he said.

Russia Coach Guss Hiddink on a New High

Guss Hiddink has fame to bring success with any side the Dutch coach has given to. With Russia’s progress to the quarter final of Euro 2008 following their 2-0 victory over Sweden, Guss Hiddink rises to a new high. They Dutch coach helped four different countries including Russia to reach the knock out stage of a major football tournament.

First, Hiddink led Netherlands national team to the semi final of 1998 world cup before taking South Korea to the semi final of 2002 world cup, the best ever performance by an Asian team in world cup. Then in 2006 world cup, Austria reached the second round under Guss Hiddink. Now, Russia reached the quarter final of Euro 2008.

Actually, wining a ticket of Euro 2008 final round was itself a success for Guss Hiddink. Russia qualified for the Euro 2008 final round at the expense of football power England. So, that was an excellent performance by the Russia. Now, reaching quarter final has become a huge success for Russia and naturally Guss Hiddink has become a national hero in Russia. Following Russia’s superb victory over Sweden, Russian media is raving about Hiddink and his boys.

AFP reported:

"Thank you, (coach Guus) Hiddink! Even his compatriots did not expect in vain that he would bring Russia into quarter-finals," the official Rossiyskaya Gazeta exulted in a frontpage report headlined "We broke through the Swedish wall."

"Now, Dutch, you tremble!" Rossiyskaya Gazeta added.

"The wait is over!" the Sport Express daily screamed at the top of its frontpage, adding its faith that "now we can wait impatiently for what will come, because this team will never again be afraid."

"It can lose, but it will never surrender. Least of all to the country that bore the man that presented us with this magical evening, and, we hope, will make many more such presents," the daily wrote.

I do not wonder about the reaction of the Russian media. The way Russia played in the match against Sweden, I think, they deserve it. So does Guss Hiddink. Now, the question is that will the Hiddink magic be stopped against Netherlands or will Guss Hiddink be able to do what Otto Rehhagel did with Greece four years ago in Euro 2004?

Netherlands is favorite on pen and paper. However, at this level of tournament, I think, no team can be said favorite because just a one good pass or a wrong pass can make the difference in the match. Both the sides look balanced and attacking. To me, if both the sides can continue their top form in the quarter final then it is going to be a mind blowing match. Now, you decide if you can afford to miss such a seemingly classic match.

Match: Croatia vs Turkey, Second Quarter Final, Euro 2008
Date: 20 June 2008, Friday
Venue: Ernst Happel, Vienna in Austria

Croatia vs Turkey: Road to Quarter Final
Croatia came to quarter final with hundred percent winning record as they won all three group matches. In the first match, they defeated co-host Austria by one goal. However, their performance was not that much impressive in the opening match. They appeared with their prime form against Germany in the second match and defeated the pre-tournament favorites 2-1 to ensure a place in the quarter final. Then in the last group match, Coach Slaven Bilic played a seemingly second string team in order to rest the regular members on yellow card. However, Croatia did not have any problem to win over Poland 1-0 in order to ensure their domination in Group B. Croatia progressed to the last eight as the winner of Group B.

Turkey did not have a good start in the tournament. They lost to Portugal 0-2 in the first match. However, it was not until Turkey recorded a superb 2-1 victory over co-host Switzerland in the second match coming back from a goal down in the match. A stoppage time goal thanks to Arda Turan secured an inspirational victory for Turkey in the match against Switzerland. In the last match Turkey required a victory against Czech Republic to get into the quarter final of the tournament. Turkey presented with a performance that will be remembered for a long time as one of the greatest comeback by a team in a major football tournament. With 15 minutes left in the match, Turkey was 2-0 down in the match, Arda Turan replied with a goal in the 75th minute. Then in the 87th and 89th minutes, Captain Nihat Kahveci scored two goals to ensure an emphatic victory for the Turkish team. With that victory, Turkey secured the second place of Group A behind leader Portugal.

Croatia vs Turkey: Head to Head and Recent Form
Croatia and Turkey faced each other thrice in which Croatia won one and other two matched ended in draw. Croatia defeated Turkey 1-0 in the opening match of Euro 1996. Now, this time, Turkey has a good chance to take a revenge of that defeat.

Croatia seems to be better in terms of recent form. Croatia won four out of last seven matches along with two draws and a defeat. Turkey, on the other hand, also recorded four victories out of last seven matches, besides two defeats and a draw.

Turkey Coach Fatih Terim Praises Croatia
Ahead of the Croatia encounter, Turkey Coach Fatih Terim has been full of praise about Croatia. However, he is not interested to look back to their previous performances and record because he thinks that at this stage of the tournament past results do not mean much. Indicating Croatia’s win over Germany, Terim thinks, Croatia is a good team, but also says that Turkey is good too. He insists, Turkey will go into the match with the hope of staying in the tournament.

International Herald Tribune reported:

"The situation is much different from how it was in 1996," said Turkey coach Fatih Terim, who was also the head of the team 12 years ago. "The Croatian team had a good performance both in qualifiers and in the championships. But at this stage of the competition, names or past results do not mean much."

"Croatia is a good team, they beat Germany, but we are a good team, too, and we will get better as each day passes," Terim said. "The Croats play well, but as far as we are concerned we will go to Vienna and lets hope we stay there, it is the winner takes all now."

Turkey Appealed against the Two-Match Suspension on Goal Keeper Volkan Demirel
Turkey might miss their regular goal keeper Volkan Demirel for the quarter final match against Croatia. Turkey’s no. 1 goal keeper Volkan Demirel was sent off during their spirited 3-2 victory over Czech Republic and is now facing a two-match ban. Turkey has already appealed against this ban ahead of their quarter final encounter against Croatia. After pushing Czech player Jan Koller to the ground in the closing minutes of the game, Volkan was shown red card. Turkish coach Fatih Terim said that if his suspension is sustained despite the appeal, experienced goal keeper Rustu Recber will come on in goal against Croatia in the quarter final match.

Croatia Coach Slaven Bilic Wary of Turkey’s Ability as a Comeback Side
As I earlier mentioned that Turkey recorded two inspirational victories in their last two group matches coming from behind. Now, Croatia coach Slaven Bilic is also worried about this ability of Turkish side. Slaven Bilic has been full of praise regarding Turkey terming them a quick and aggressive side. However, Bilic also indicates that like all the teams, Turkey also has weaknesses.

Reuters reported:

"Their comebacks in those two games were quite remarkable and showed they are a force to be reckoned with," Bilic told a news conference.

"Turkey are quick and aggressive and have several very skilful players, so I am really not surprised that they progressed to the quarter-finals.

"We will take nothing for granted although we would certainly like to score first because they are by no means invincible. Like all teams in the tournament, they have weaknesses too."

Both Sides Suffering from Injury Problem
Ahead of the quarter final clash on Friday, both Croatia and Turkey are facing injury problems. Croatia has lost two members of its squad for the rest of the tournament. Defender Dario Knezevic picked up a knee injury during Croatia 1-0 victory over Poland in their last group match and was substituted by defender Vedran Corluk in the first half of the match. Recently, Croatia coach Slaven Bilic has recently confirmed that Dario Knezevic’s tournament has come to an end with strained knee ligaments. However, the coach has also ensured that the defender’s injury is not serious in the long term, but Bilic admitted that the absence of the centre back is a huge blow for Croatia.

Coach Slaven Bilic will be missing another player for the rest of the tournament. Striker Igor Budan has suffered a knee injury and now has to sit out the rest of Croatia’s European Championship. The striker, who came in as a substitute in Croatia’s first match against Austria and then was among the reserve, now has to undergo an arthroscopic surgery. Coach Bilic has said that the team will consider for a replacement if they can get into the semi final of the tournament. Midfielder Darijo Srna and Ivan Rakitic are expected to be available for the Turkey encounter recovering from minor injuries.

Turkey has also got to worry for something on injury ground. Turkey defender Emre Gungor has been out of the rest of the Euro 2008 competition with a calf injury. Gungor suffered a torn muscle fibre in the left calf during Turkey’s inspirational 3-2 victory over Czech Republic and was substituted after 63 minutes of the match.

Croatia Coach Slaven Bilic: Quarter Final was Original Goal, but Not Enough Now
Ahead of the Croatia vs Turkey quarter final match, Croatia coach now look to reach the semi final of Euro 2008 by defeating Turkey in the last eight of the competition. He has said that quarter final was Croatia’s main goal initially, but now it is not enough. According to Bilic, Croatia has the strength and quality to beat Turkey in the quarter final tomorrow. The coach has also expressed his respect for Turkey team saying that their comebacks in the previous two matches were impressive, but also pointed out that the way Turkey trialed in the games also indicates something for Croatia.

Canadian Press reported:

"Our quarter-final berth may be a surprise for some, but it isn't for us," coach Slaven Bilic said. "Our original goal was to reach the quarter-finals, but now that's not enough. We will do everything to beat Turkey. We have the strength and the quality to do it."

"The way they managed the comebacks in those games was impressive," Bilic said. "But, the way they trailed in those games also tells us something. Their strength is obviously somewhere in between."

Bilic has been impressed with the performance of Ivan Klasnic, who scored the winning goal for Croatia against Poland. Klasnic has come into the tournament after a kidney transplant. The coach considers him as one of the strongest assets for the next match.

Croatia might seem to be a bit ahead of Turkey considering their hundred percent winning record in the group stage. However, taking Turkey’s superb comebacks in the last two group matches into account, I think, Turkey has the ability to defeat Croatia in the match. So, to be honest, I do not see any favorite team for this match, as both the teams have some strong sides that would help them in the quarter final. The question lies here is that if the two sides will be able to continue their impressive form in the quarter final as well. The answer will make the difference between the two teams in the match. However, one thing is for sure that both sides know it very well that a semi final berth would take them very close to winning the title of Euro 2008. So, don’t you think that an excellent match is waiting there at the Ernst Happel, Vienna in Austria?
