US Open 2007: Maria Sharapova’s Shocking Defeat at the Third Round

Maria Sharapova has been out of the US Open 2007. In her third round match, she lost to Polish teenager Agnieszka Radwanska by 4-6, 6-1, 2-6. As the defending champion of US Open, Sharapova was expected to defend her title in US Open 2007. 20 year old Sharapova could not show any resistant in the final set. It is undoubtedly the biggest upsets yet in US Open 2007.

Maria Sharapova was born in Russia in 1987 in Nyagan, Russia. From her childhood Sharapova started playing tennis. At the age of 9, Maria Sharapova joined Nick Bollettieri's Tennis Academy in USA along with her father Youri. It was something very hard for a 9 year old girl to come to a new country leaving her mother. Sharapova’s mother Yelena could not come with her due to visa problems.

It was her love for tennis that inspired Sharapova to adjust with a new country. At that time, Sharapova’s family had gone though financial crisis as well. Maria Sharapova started playing professional tennis form 2001 at the age of 14. The Russian beauty won her first grand slam at the age of 17. Sharapova defeated reigning champion in the final of Wimbledon 2004. Thus Sharapova became the first Russian woman to win the Wimbledon title. Just after one year, Maria Sharapova became the first Russian female tennis players to become the world no. 1 in 2005. So, success came one after another in Maria Sharapova’s life. In 2006 US Open, Maria Sharapova won her second grand slam title in her career.

Maria Sharapova was not so impressive this year, though she reached at the Australian Open 2007 final. However, it is really very shocking for a defending champion to suffer a third round exit. I think, it is a mere upset. Maria Sharapova will be able to come back with her prime form next year.
