3:10 to Yuma: "La Yuma"

Yuma is the name of a county situated in Arizona near the border of Mexico. There is nothing significant about this town but 3:10 to Yuma has made it the most talked about American locale in Cuba. The 50’s classic was so successful in Cuba that a lingo “La Yuma” developed in Cuba. It refers to USA or Americans or any foreigners from a Non- Spanish country. After fifty years, the movie has been remade. Two of the top actors of Hollywood are working in the new version. Nobody knows whether the movie will be successful or not but definitely it will reinforce the popularity of “Yuma” in Cuba. Showbuzz.cbsnews.com reports:

"A new movie could mean Yuma is used more by young people who know nothing of the original," said Fernando Carr, who writes a column on language for the official magazine Bohemia.
Washington's embargo prohibits most U.S.-Cuba trade. But American films are commonly shown on state TV and in crumbling 1950s theaters where tickets cost less than a U.S. nickel. A thriving black market for pirated DVDs and videos also likely will ensure some Cubans see the 2007 version of "3:10 to Yuma."
Cubans rarely use the term "gringo," slang for American heard in Mexico and throughout Latin America. While some here refer to Americans as ``yanquis'' in a derogatory way, "Yuma" generally is not meant to be offensive.
In Cuba the term “La Yuma” became popular after 1980 when Cubans seeking political asylum crashed a minibus in Havana. Yuma’s Mayor, Larry Nelson is expects that the small town will be very popular after the release of 3:10 to Yuma on September 7.
