Manchester City Defeated Newcastle United 2-1

Manchester City clinched full points against Newcastle United as they defeated the Magpies 2-1 at the Eastlands today. With this victory, City moved to the second place in the table ahead of Manchester United and Arsenal with 14 points to their credit, though Arsenal has a match in hand.

Going into the game on the back of last week’s inspirational 1-0 victory over Chelsea, City must be happy to pick up all 3 points from today’s fixture. Captain Carlos Tevez put Manchester City ahead in the 18th minute when he converted a penalty. However, Newcastle United bounced back just 6 minutes later when Gutiérrez equalized for the visitors.

The first half ended 1-1, but the scoreline could have been different had both sides not missed their scoring opportunities. City got the winning goal through winger Adam Johnson in the 75th minute. Newcastle United tried all the way to come back, but City defense looked too hard for them to break.

Newcastle United is now at the 14th place with 7 points from 7 matches. They are, in fact, just a point above the relegation zone.

After the international break, Manchester City will face Blackpool in their next match on 17 October, while Newcastle United is going to take on Wigan Athletic on 16 October.

Sol Campbell Signed for Newcastle United for a Year

Sol Campbell has finally completed his move to newly promoted Newcastle United as a free agent. The 35-year-old has been looking for a new club almost throughout the summer after failing to agree a new deal with Arsenal.

The central defender joined the Gunners last January for the second time in his career and his short-term contract expired this summer. Arsenal wanted to keep him for one more season, but the former Tottenham Hotspur player wanted a two-year contract.

Sol Campbell was then linked with Celtic and Sunderland too. At one point, it looked he was very close to joining Celtic who were reported ready to hand him a two-year contract. However, Sol Campbell, who married just few weeks back, did not want to go to Scotland.

Sol Campbell is delighted to have joined the Magpies and is looking forward to working with manager Chris Hughton. Newcastle United manager is also happy to have signed the experienced defender.

Sol Campbell said to the media, “To join a club such as Newcastle United, with its proud tradition, heritage and magnificent support, is absolutely tremendous for me.

I'd like to thank Chris Hughton for putting his faith in me and aim to repay him and the supporters by giving everything I possibly can to help re-establish this great club in the top-tier of English football.

I just want to play and can't wait to get started. There's a real buzz about the place and that's great. I've played at St. James' Park numerous times and always found it a fantastic place to play, there's always a tremendous atmosphere.”

Sol Campbell is 35 now and has already seen his best, but still he is a quality and highly experienced defender whom any manager can rely on. Chris Hughton’s first mission is to keep Newcastle at the Premier League and Campbell has all the qualities to help him in his pursuit.

Arsenal Defender Sol Campbell Close to Join Newcastle United

Newly promoted Newcastle United now seems to be the next destination for former England international Sol Campbell. The 35-year-old has been on the lookout for a new club throughout the summer since his short-term contract with Arsenal expired.

Sol Campbell is reportedly going to have a general medical at Newcastle today and the deal could be done on Wednesday. However, the duration of the possible contract has not been known yet.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger wanted Campbell to stay with the Gunners for one more season, but the center back demanded a two-year contract extension which Wenger refused. So, he has been a free agent and already attracted the attention of Scottish giant Celtic and Sunderland.

Sol Campbell even visited Scotland to hold talks with Celtic officials who were reportedly interested to hand him a two-year contract. However, it is now believed that newly married Campbell wants to settle down in England.

Sunderland also showed interest in Sol Campbell, but their interest has been subsided following their signing of Titus Bramble from Wigan Athletic. So, it is pretty much clear that Sol Campbell would most likely be seen in Newcastle shirt next season.

Newcastle United needs to bolster their defense ahead of the new season with Steven Taylor suffering from shoulder injury. Campbell may have already seen his best, but last season he proved that he still has some quality left in him. So, his quality coupled with his vast experience could be decisive for Newcastle United next season.

Sol Campbell represented England in 73 international matches and has played around 500 Premier League matched during his 18-year career.

EPL 08-09: Manchester United vs Newcastle United Live Updates

Manchester United will start their title defense campaign in English premier league tomorrow when they taken on Newcastle United at Old Trafford. Ferguson boys will definitely look to start the season with a victory over Kevin Kegan’s Newcastle United. Manchester United won the last two EPL season. So, the Red Devils are now gearing up to win their hat-trick title in premier league. Newcastle, on the other hand, did not have a good season last year as they finished 12th in the league standing. So, they will also look to get off to a good start this season.

Match: Manchester United vs Newcastle United, EPL 2008-2009

Date: 17 August 2008

Venue: Old Trafford

Kick off: 16:00 BST

Newcastle United suffered a 0-6 victory to Manchester United last season with all the goals coming in second half of the match. That was a nightmarish experience for Kevin Keegan who was on his very first match following his come-back to the hot seat of Newcastle United. Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given was the most shattered person that night as he closely experienced each and every Manchester United goal. Given, though hopeful for a different experience this time around, thinks they are short of few more players to strengthen the squad.

Telegraph reported:

"We hope things are going to be better this time, but I can't sit here and say they definitely will be," he added. "I do feel that we need to strengthen the squad a bit.

"Injuries and suspensions could hit us a lot harder than Manchester United, who can put out two full international teams. We don't have enough quality in depth.''

No doubt, Manchester United has a big squad and there is enough depth as well. For example, Manchester United will miss their Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo in the match due to his ankle injury, but they have quality options like Wayne Rooney, Carlos Tevez to lead their attacking line up. Louis Saha. Owen Hargreaves, Park Ji-Sung all are suffering from knee injury and will sit out for the Newcastle match. Moreover, Nani has been ruled out of the match due to suspension and Anderson is away with Olympic duty.

The good news for Manchester United that Rooney has got over the virus in time and is ready to face Newcastle tomorrow. Midfielder Michael Carrick has also recovered from virus and is in contention for the opening match. Despite missing these key players, Manchester United still have players like Scholes, Giggs, Fletcher, O'Shea to lead the team.

Newcastle is also facing some injury problems. In fact, they will miss two of their key players from attacking line up: Captain Michael Owen and Australian star Mark Viduka. Forward Shola Ameobi is also out of Newcastle’s tomorrow’s fixture at Old Trafford. So, there is enough possibility that manager Kevin Kegan might hand new signings Jonas Gutiérrez and Fabricio Coloccini their debut match against Manchester United.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United Premier League: Joey Barton to Come Back

Football fans are going to see Arsenal and Newcastle Untied facing each other for the second time within a week as the two will meet in the league clash on Tuesday, following Arsenal’s 3-0 victory over Newcastle Untied in the fourth round FA Cup match at the Emirates stadium. Now, Kevin Keegan boys need to revitalize themselves ahead of the match against Arsenal.

Newcastle Untied will get midfielder Joey Barton available for the match. However, he would not be in the starting line up as coach hinted to keep him among the substitutes. Barton was keen to be back in the starting line up, however, coach Keegan decided not to bring him in the starting line up considering Joey Barton’s long way traveling to join the training.

Telegraph reported:

Joey is fit and wants to play but has not had any matches," Keegan told the club's official website.

"He is travelling a long way to train and I have explained to him why he won’t be involved until the picture becomes a little bit clearer. He understands that and there’s no problem."

"He has worked really hard in training and I do believe that we will make a plus out of a minus,” he added. “It’s not been a good time for him but if we can draw a line under this we can turn it into a positive."

However, Newcastle Untied will not get their Australian striker Mark Viduka against Arsenal as he needs some more time in order to recover fully from his injury. The major concern of Newcastle Untied is that their star players are now out of form. Michael Owen has not been impressive throughout the season. With 2 goals from 15 matches, Owen is ye to get his from back since his move to Newcastle United from Real Madrid. The fans of Newcastle United are eagerly waiting to see an in from Owen, which could change their overall performance.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United English Premier League Preview

Arsenal and Newcastle United are going to face each other for the second time within a week on Tuesday at the Emirates stadium. Having experienced a crushing defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, last week, Arsenal bounced back in front of the home crowd on Saturday projecting a 3-0 victory over struggling Newcastle Untied in the fourth round of FA Cup. With this victory, Arsenal eased into the next round of FA Cup.

Newcastle will obviously seek revenge of their 3- defeat to Arsenal on Tuesday’s premier league match. Newcastle has not been at their great form so far this season with only 27 points from 23 matches. On the other hand, Arsenal is going hand in hand with leader Manchester United. Though Manchester tops the league point table by goal difference, Arsenal is breathing on Manchester’s neck in English premier league.

For Newcastle Untied, second half has become a problem so far this season. They have been playing well in the first half, but their second half performance is making the difference. Newcastle United fans started to hope to see the good days of Newcastle under the newly appointed coach Kevin Keegan. However, Keegan could not bring any change in the performance of Newcastle Untied so far.

For Kevin Keegan, his first task now is to bring the best out of his players. The likes of Michael Owen are now in off from. However, it is, for sure, Keegan should be given some time to prove his worth. Any quick success from him would not be fair now.

Goal.com reported:

As the man himself keeps stressing, Keegan needs time to build a rejuvenated Newcastle, but harnessing the much under-utilised talents of those at his disposal is his immediate task. This is perhaps most applicable to Michael Owen, the most likely source of the team’s first goal under this new regime, although this may not be the game in which the England international is handed sufficient goalscoring chances.

Arsenal defense was not that much impressive in the last match. Except William Gallas, their consistent defenders were not strong against Newcastle United last weekend. So, if they can not be back in form against Newcastle Untied on Tuesday, then Arsenal might have to face problem in front of the home fans.

Emmanuel Adebayor has been in impressive form so far in this season with 18 goals from 28 matches. He has scored twice in their 3-0 demolition of Newcastle Untied. So, Newcastle United must have an eye on Emmanuel Adebayor in their league clash.

Newcastle manager Keegan is expected to bring on midfielder Joey Barton among the substitutes against Arsenal. He was also expected to be come back in the last match. However, it is not yet confirmed if Barton will be bought on the field for some time or not. Owen is also expected to bring back in form, which many Newcastle fans are now praying for.

It is always tough to predict anything regarding a match between the two teams like Arsenal and Newcastle Untied. If you look at the recent performance, statistics, you will realize that Arsenal is favorite in the match in the paper. However, Newcastle Untied has just played a match against Arsenal. So, Kevin Keegan side will try their best to knock down the mistakes they did in the FA Cup match and must have some special goals to achieve in the match against Arsenal. Though they are not in the FA Cup this season, they will have all their focus on premier league now. So, Newcastle United is expected to play inspirational football. For Arsenal, winning matches is the prerequisite of winning the title. If they want to continue their run towards the title, they can not afford any more slip off. I hope to see an exciting match at the Emirates stadium.

Arsenal vs Newcastle United FA Cup Preview

Having crushed out of the Carling Cup, Arsenal now has to play against Newcastle United on Saturday in the fourth round match of FA Cup. Arsenal has had a great run in the premier league this season, however, they looked like helpless at the White Hearth Lane last week in their 1-5 humiliating defeat to arch rivals Tottenham Hotsput. Now, ahead of the match, Arsenal has some good news. Philippe Senderos and Gael Clichy will be available for their FA Cup clash. However, Arsenal will not get Denilson, Johan Djourou and Robin van Persie as they have not yet recovered from their injuries.

Newcastle Untied must be inspired to play well under their reappointed manager Kevin Keegan. Their performance in the season is now satisfactory at all. Newcastle manager has recently expressed his desire to cause an upset against Arsenal. The way Arsenal blown off the league cup, was really very disappointing and they must need a victory over Newcastle to revive their form. Newcastle United will get Nicky Butt and Alan Smith for the match.

After a humiliating 5-1 defeat to local rivals Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal is now going to face Newcastle United at the Emirates Stadium on 26 January, Saturday in the fourth round FA Cup match. With that defeat, Arsenal lost their chance to play in the Carling Cup final this season. Added to that, Arsenal has made the headlines following the on field disagreement between two of their strikers Emmanuel Adebayor and Nicklas Bendtner. So, Arsenal has suffered double blow at White Hart Lane. Now, ahead of the FA Cup match against Newcastle United, it is clear that Arsenal is going though a tough time.

Otherwise, Arsenal has a good season so far in English premier league and they continued a successful run in Champions league 2007-2008 season after making it to the last 16. Arsenal stands second in the premier league table in goal difference with Manchester United, as both the clubs achieved 54 points each.

Newcastle United has not been a great season it the premier league with only 27 points from 23 matches. They are placed in the 12th position in the point table. So, fans are also disappointed with their performance. Star forward Michael Owen has not yet lived up to the expectation since his move from Real Madrid. What is more, the club is now missing some of their key players Obafemi Martins, Geremi and Abdoulaye Faye who are away on international duty with their nations in African Nations Cup 2008 tournament. So, it has become very tough for Newcastle to cope up with missing these players.

Arsenal is also missing Kolo Touré, Alexandre Song and Emmanuel Eboué for the African Nations Cup. To tell the truth, these three players had a big part behind Arsenal’s impressive run in this season. Aside from the fact they surrendered like a helpless side to Tottenham Hotspur, the Gunners were impressive throughout the season. Now, it seems that the absence of these three players have contributed to their recent performance.

However, Arsenal captain is hopeful about their premier league performance. He called on his teammates to become careful and insisted that they would learn from the mistakes.

Goal.com reported:

Gallas said: "The whole club is upset, but we have to accept what happened and forget it.
"I know it is hard for our fans to lose 5-1 to Tottenham, especially as we had not lost to them for such a long time.
"In the warm-up before the game I told the players to be careful. But we conceded an early goal, lost our calm - and after that everything was no good for us.
"All the young boys wanted to go to Wembley and play in a cup final and now we are all sad because that's not going to happen.

Regarding his on field clash with Nicklas Bendtner, Arsenal’s Togolese striker Emmanuel Adebayor has apologized for what happened during Carling Cup match against Tottenham Hotspur.

Telegraph reported:

Adebayor said: "We are both passionate about this club and sometimes that can be projected in the wrong way. It was a mistake. We want to focus on the games ahead and rely on our squad's great togetherness to achieve a fantastic season. We are a strong unit and what happened against Spurs will strengthen our determination to compete for other targets.

"Overall, I think that we should have been more calm during the game and I am sorry for the disagreement with my team-mate Nicklas."

However, both the players are likely face punishment for the confrontation from Football Association. Arsenal authority may also come down hard on the matter. While Arsenal is facing series of problems, Newcastle United is hoping to revive their performance under the newly appointed manager Kevin Keegan. He is planning to bring on midfielder Joey Barton against Arsenal in the FA Cup match.

Both the teams are going though a bad time at this moment considering the incidents and their performance. So, Arsenal and Newcastle Untied must try their best to get over the bad time with an impressive performance on their FA Cup meeting. Arsenal will have home advantage. However, I do not think that it will help them much if they can not play well against Newcastle United.
