Finalists of Miss Jamaica World 2007

Out of 39 contestants 16 have been chosen by seven judges at the primary level of 2007 Miss Jamaica World beauty pageant. This year, the exception was that the contestants were supposed to apply through internet. The process was very successful and saved lots of time and money. On the day of selection, the judges were expecting 25 applicants but the number went up to 39. Jamaica Gleaner reports:

Twenty-five applicants were invited to attend the private selection at Spartan Health Club on Wednesday. On that day, numbers swelled to 39. The judges for the event were: Tommy James, who this year will again be chief judge for the pageant finals, Laurel DeMercado, Shirley Hanna, Shienne Holman, Marcel Robinson of Interlinc Communications, Uzuri's Karl Williams and pageant promoter Mickey Haughton-James.

Resounding success
Mr. Haughton James, managing director of Spartan and pageant promoter, thinks that the new system of selection has been a resounding success and the high standard of the finalists is testimony to its success. "Unlike most other years when there was an elimination show to select the contestants, the selection this year has been done privately and very successfully. Energies will, instead, now be directed towards preparing the contestants for an excellent coronation which will be held August 18 at the Jamaica Pegasus."

The 16 finalists were presented to the public at the Sovereign Centre, Liguanea, last Saturday.

The name of the finalists are: Jody Shaw, Sasha Leigh Gordon, Tina Ingram, Kadia Brooks, Marika Hornsby, Racquel Powell, Natalia Godfrey, Rosina Casserly, Angina Thomas, Camesha Powell, Simone Poot, Kristen Wood, Tiffany Ellis, Yendi Phillips, Renae Ellis, Kristin Metz. From these 16 finalists one will be chosen to participate in Miss World 2007 which will be held in China in on December 1.

They wouldn't have to waste their time to come down and be disappointed," he explained. The new format is also more private as the first time the wider public will see any of contestants is at the swimwear and sportswear presentation and sashing on Saturday July 14, at the Sovereign Centre. He joked that in years past at the public elimination shows, some persons came to the pre-judgings/eliminations to witness the slip-ups of the prospective candidates.
"We feel this (the system) is very efficient and even some girls who might not have entered before may do so now," he added. The finalists will undergo the usual intensive training in grooming, stage presentation, speech and physical conditioning. The pageant finals will be staged August 18 at the Jamaica Pegasus hotel.

The authority is also trying to make the competition more private for the contestants in order to increase the number of competitors. Miss World is a popular competition throughout the world. So, Jamaica is now trying to send the best contestant to this prestigious competition
