India vs England 4th ODI 2008: Live Score

India is going to face England in the fourth ODI of the series at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore on 23rd November 2008. Winning all the first three matches, India is now leading 3-0 in the seven-match ODI series- meaning a victory in Bangalore would ensure the series win for India. For England, it has been a must-win match in order to save the series. England came into the series on the back of an excellent ODI series victory at home that saw England demolished visiting South Africa 4-0 in the 5-match ODI series, but England team has so far failed to replicate that form in India. The upcoming match at Bangalore is the last chance for England to come back in the series.

Match: India vs England, Fourth ODI (Day-Night Match) 2008

Date: 23 November, Sunday

Venue: M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore

Kick off: 14:00 local time (08:30 GMT)

Live on TV: NEO Cricket, DD National/ DD Sports

Though India won all the previous three matches in the series, they did not look as formidable in the last two matches as they were in the first match at Rajkot where they demolished the visiting side by 1158 runs. In the second match in Indore, India managed a 54-run victory followed by a 16-run win by D/L method in the third match in Kanpur. In fact, India faced tough challenge from England in the third match, especially from their pacers. The main problem for England is that they do not have quality spinners to carry on the momentum give by the pacers and thus they can not keep the pressure on the Indian batsmen in the middle of the innings. For example, in the second match, England picked up 3 early wickets, but still India could manage to reach at 292 runs.

The same thing happened in the third match too. English pacers picked up wicket in one end, but did not get enough support from the spinners. Off spinner Graeme Swann, who was playing his first match in the series in Kanpur, was looking pretty good, but that was not what England needed to dominate over the Indian batsmen in the spinning wicket. Indian condition and wicket are traditionally spinner friendly and England desperately needs a quality spinner like Ashley Giles. Samit Patel and Graeme Swann are good spinners, but they do not have the ability to dominate over the Indian batsmen who are traditionally very good at playing spin bowling.

Another thing that England must concentrate on is their batting against Indian spinners. Except the first match at Rajkot, England batsmen were dominated by the Indian spinners, particularly, by Yuvraj Singh in the second match and Harbhajan Singh in the third. It was really very pathetic for the England fans to see an occasional spinner like Yuvraj Singh picking up 4 top order wickets of England. In the third match, England openers got off to a good start, putting on 79 runs on the board for the first wicket, but English batsmen started wobbling when Dhoni brought spinners into attack. Harbhajan Singh’s excellent straight spell of 10 overs did exactly what India needed at that point, picking up 3 wickets for 31 runs.

However, England might feel some relief, considering the fact that Bangalore wicket may not be spinner friendly; rather it could provide something for the pacers too. There is a possibility pacers might get bounce in the wicket in Bangalore. In fact, the recent test match played between India and Australia in Bangalore saw pacers picking up 21 wickets out of 31 wickets fell in the match. Moreover, the last ODI match played in Bangalore was between India and Australia last year which saw pacers doing better than the spinners. However, interestingly both last ODI and test matches played in Bangalore were high scoring. So, ahead of the fourth ODI, batsmen in either side do not need to fear about the wickets.

I already mentioned that India has been in excellent form so far in the series as they are doing well in all three departments. However, Indian pacers were not up to the mark in the third match at Kanpur, but Harbhajan Singh’s off spin was quite enough to dominate over the English batsmen. One thing here I want to mention is that Dhoni gave Yuvraj Singh 10 overs in one spell, even when he was giving many runs and spinner-all rounder Yusuf Pathan was not used till then. I think, that only gave English batsmen some time to come out of the pressure after losing 3 wickets in quick succession. England was in tremendous pressure as Harbhajan Singh was looking dangerous in one end. Dhoni should have brought Yusuf Pathan into attack to create more pressure on the England batsmen.

Another thing is that Dhoni used Harbhajan Singh’s 10 over in one-spell without keeping any spare over of Harbhajan Singh for later use. No doubt, Harbhajan was bowling with full swing, but I think, Dhoni should have kept a couple of overs for Harbhajan as he knew that his pacers did not fare well early in the innings. Yusuf Pathan is considered to be the second choice spinner after Harbhajan Singh, but Dhoni used him only for 2 overs in which the off spinner conceded only 7 runs, picking up the important wicket of Andrew Flintoff.

There is no doubt, India’s batting line up has been performing pretty much consistently so far this series. Two openers Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir have been in excellent form now, while Yuvraj Singh has got back his form with two back-to-back centuries in the first two matches. In the presence of Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, Dhoni and Yusuf Pathan, India’s middle order looks strong and balanced.

India seems to be favorite, but England may have a good chance to come back in the series, given the pacer friendly characteristic of Bangalore wicket. I think, the fourth ODI is going to be very close and fans will see a hard-fought match.

India vs England 3rd ODI: India Won by 16 Runs on D/L Method

India picked up third straight victory over the visiting England today in Kanpur in the third of the seven-match ODI series. Winning the toss England Captain Kevin Pietersen elected to bat first and English openers gave enough justification to their captain’s decision by putting on 79 runs for the first wickets. However, middle order batsmen of England failed to carry on the momentum set by the openers. With Harbhajan Singh started bowling at his best, England batsmen started struggling. From 79 for 0, England turned into 133 for 4 within 15 overs. Opener Ravi Bopara scored innings highest 60 runs, while his opening partner Ian Bell played an innings of 47-ball 46.

However, I do not know why Mahendra Singh Dhoni gave Yuvraj Singh 10 overs in a straight-spell while he was conceding many runs and spinners like Yusuf Pathan and Virender Sehwag were not used till then. It is true that Yuvraj Singh picked up the important wicket of Ravi Bopara but, I think, Harbhajan Singh played a huge role behind that wicket, conceding very few runs and picking up wickets in one end and keeping the pressure on the English batsmen. Later on, Yusuf Pathan, who picked up the big wicket of Andrew Flintoff, proved that he could have fared better than Yuvraj Singh when Harbhajan Singh was not letting the pressure off the English batsmen.

Anyway, all's well that ends well. India could comfortably restrict England innings at 240, picking up all the wickets. Owais Shah’s 40, Flintoff’s 26 and Samit Patel’s 26 guided England to make a descent total. Harbhajan Singh picked up 3 wickets for 31 and reached 200-wicket mark in ODI. Munaf Patel, Ishant Sharma got 2 wickets each, while Zaheer Khan and Yusuf Pathan got 1 wicket each.

Chasing 241, India did not have as good a start they had in their first two matches. Gautam Gambhir’s dismissal on 14 left India on 31 for 1 in the seventh over. India seemed to have fallen in big trouble when Suresh Raina also went back to pavilion, scoring only 1 runs to his credit. However, opener Virender Sehwag continued his aggressive batting in his way to score the innings highest 68 runs. Along with Rohit Sharma, Sehwag added 73 runs for the third wicket partnership. Both Rohit Sharma and Virender Sehwag got out in quick succession for 28 and 68 runs respectively. Yuvraj Singh and Mahendra Singh Dhoni took the helm of Indian innings at that point and added 52 runs for the fifth wicket, but Yuvraj Singh failed to bring out another blistering knock being got out on 38. However, Dhoni along with Yusuf Pathan was guiding India towards a target before bad light stopped the game when India was 198 for 5 after 40 overs. Match officials declared India winner of the match according to Duckworth and Lewis method. Harbhajan Singh was awarded man of the match for his excellent bowling.
