Women’s World Cup 2007: Germany and England Enter into the Quarter Final

England and Germany have qualified for the quarter final of Women’s World Cup 2007. Germany’s star women’s footballer Birgit Prinz has made a new world record scoring one goal in the last group match against Japan. Birgit Prinz has become the highest goal scorer in Women’s world cup breaking the previous record of Michelle Ackers of USA. Germany is the defending champion and they are also favorite this time in China to win defend their title.

On the other hand, for England, this is the second world cup appearance. They first participated in 1995 Women’s world cup and qualified for the quarter final round. However, they could not qualify for the last two world cup competitions. So, qualifying to the Women’s world cup 2007 was their initial goal but now it seems that England has the potential to claim something bigger from this tournament. In the last group match, England defeated Argentina with a big margin of 6-1 and thus they could qualify for the quarter final leaving Japan and Argentina in the group.

English striker Kelly Smith is in her prime form. She has already score four goals so far in the tournament. So, England fans now can hope something special from their players. Though it is not sure whom England is going to face in the quarter final round, they may face USA or North Korea in the quarter final. Now, let us see how far England can go in Women’s world cup 2007. Only time can give the best answer of it.

Women’s World Cup 2007: Schedule of England

Women’s world cup 2007 will be held in China. This will be the fifth edition of Women’s world cup. China was the host of the first women’s world cup in 1991. So, it seems that Women’s world cup has come back to its home soil. Women’s world cup will begin from 10 September 2007. England is not a big power in women’s football. It is really very hard to believe that the forthcoming world cup will be the second world cup appearance for England. The first world cup appearance of England was in 1995 where they reached at the quarter final round.

England will play in Group A where they have to face defending champion Germany, Argentina, and Asian power Japan. However, England is improving and seems to be a balanced side. England has to face strong challenge from Germany and Argentina in group stage. I think, it would be difficult for England to qualify for the quarter final stage from group A. Here, I am giving the full group stage schedule of England below:

England coach has given much focus on the experienced. So, it will be their main advantage in Women’s world cup 2007. Most of their footballers have sheer experience of playing in international level. England team has another advantage and that is, most of their footballers play in English league along with foreign players. Thus, their players can play football all the year. So, English player do not have lack of practice.
