Himachal Pradesh is a state of Northern India. The literal meaning of Himachal Pradesh is Region of Snowy Mountains. It is also known as Deva Bhumi. In Sanskrit, ‘Hima’ means snow. The name “Himachal Pradesh” had been created by Acharya Diwakar Datt Sharma, one of the great Sanskrit scholars of Himachal.

Aryan influence in the region dates back to the period before Rigveda. After the Anglo-Gorkha war, the British took control over the region.

Initially, Himachal Pradesh was part of Punjab. The Siba State of Punjab was under the rule of Maharaja Ranjit Singh till 1857. In 1950, Himachal was declared as a union territory. After the State of Himachal Pradesh Act came into effect in 1971, Himachal emerged as the 18th state of the Indian Union.

Spread over 21,495 sq miles, it is bordered by the Indian states of Jammu and Kashmir on the north, Punjab on the west and south-west, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh on the south, Uttarakhan on the South-east and Tibet Autonomous Region on the east. Himachal houses many prestigious boarding schools of India.
