Arsenal Defender Sol Campbell Close to Join Newcastle United

Newly promoted Newcastle United now seems to be the next destination for former England international Sol Campbell. The 35-year-old has been on the lookout for a new club throughout the summer since his short-term contract with Arsenal expired.

Sol Campbell is reportedly going to have a general medical at Newcastle today and the deal could be done on Wednesday. However, the duration of the possible contract has not been known yet.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger wanted Campbell to stay with the Gunners for one more season, but the center back demanded a two-year contract extension which Wenger refused. So, he has been a free agent and already attracted the attention of Scottish giant Celtic and Sunderland.

Sol Campbell even visited Scotland to hold talks with Celtic officials who were reportedly interested to hand him a two-year contract. However, it is now believed that newly married Campbell wants to settle down in England.

Sunderland also showed interest in Sol Campbell, but their interest has been subsided following their signing of Titus Bramble from Wigan Athletic. So, it is pretty much clear that Sol Campbell would most likely be seen in Newcastle shirt next season.

Newcastle United needs to bolster their defense ahead of the new season with Steven Taylor suffering from shoulder injury. Campbell may have already seen his best, but last season he proved that he still has some quality left in him. So, his quality coupled with his vast experience could be decisive for Newcastle United next season.

Sol Campbell represented England in 73 international matches and has played around 500 Premier League matched during his 18-year career.
