Indian cricketers may feel that they are already through to the Super Eight thanks to their win over the Afghans, but they should remember that causing upset is nothing new to this confident Afghan team who recently defeated Ireland in a warm-up match. So, if they can cause an upset against South Africa and India loses to South Africa tomorrow, then India would be in trouble. Naturally, India would not take the match lightly and would be looking to pick up full points from the game.

Last year’s semi finalist, South Africa, has a bigger ambition this time. In fact, Smith and co. would be determined to put an end to their long-time hope of winning a world cup. A number of South African cricketers like Jacques Kallis and Albie Morkel have been in good form coming back from IPL. So, there should not be any lack in their confidence level. However, the Protease are always ill-fated when it come to world cup. They went close to winning world cup titles many times in the past, but never achieved it yet. South Africa fans believe that their hopes would be fulfilled in T20 world cup 2010.

IOL reported:

At the last count, it was 12 failed attempts, and Graeme Smith and his 2010 troops do not want it to stretch to unlucky No13.
South Africa, though, would be foolish to look that far ahead as the immediate danger lies immediately ahead in the shape of India.

It is true that India did not have to struggle to win over Afghanistan, but one thing is for sure that it was not a very convincing win for the Indians. Chasing a target of 116, India lost 3 wickets and played almost 15 overs. However, it was a pretty descent start for India, the winner of the inaugural twenty20 world cup 2007.

Afghanistan players did not make it easy for India as they fought back after putting only 115 runs on the board.

The Hindu reported:

Afghanistan were impressive in both bowling and fielding. Left arm speedster Shapoor Zadran worked up a good pace.

Riht-arm medium fast Dawalat Ahmadzai got the wicket of Gautam Gambhir with Mohammad Nabi taking a fine catch at cover point.

Afghanistan’s bowlers made good use of slow nature of the turf and did manage to tie down the Indian batsmen in the middle overs.

Before the start of the tournament, everybody was saying that batting was the main strength of Indian team. However, as far as the first match performance goes, Indian pacers outperformed their batsmen. Praveen Kumar, Nehra and Zaheer Khan were really impressive and it would be great if they can continue the momentum in the coming games. Back in 2003, India reached the world cup final (ODI) in South Africa and three pacers including Srinath, Nehra and Zaheer Khan led their bowling attack from the front. Srinath is not playing anymore, but it seems that this pace-trio including Praveen Kumar would contribute a lot to India’s success. If India looks to replicate their 2007 success, then its pacers must play a big role in the pacer friendly Caribbean condition.

South African is a balanced side. It has big hitters like Smith, Gibbs, Loots Bosman, Villiers and Boucher and effective all rounders like Kallis, Duminy and Albie Morkel. Led by Dale Steyn, South African pace attack includes Morkel brothers, Langeveldt, in-form Kallis, Rory Kleinveldt and young Juan Theron.

Indian batting line looks pretty strong too. Open Murali Vijay showed that he has the mettle to replace someone like Virender Sehwag. His opening partner Gautam Gambhir played some good innings in IPL, but more than that Raina, Dhoni and Yusuf Pathan are in good form, while for Yuvraj Singh, this is the biggest stage to come back with form. Ravinder Jadeja looks determined to get past its IPL nightmare.
