Can Chelsea Win Champions League This Season?

Chelsea is the only ‘Big Four’ club in English football who has not won Champions League title yet. It does not mean that they are very weak in Europe and can not deal with the other stronger opponents of European football. In fact, Chelsea is one of the most consistent performers of Champions league recently. Chelsea finished in the top four in Europe on five occasions in the last six seasons. The blues went very close to win the coveted titled in 2007-08 season, but eventually lost to champion Manchester United in the tournament final in Moscow. Last season, they lost to champion Barcelona in the semi final.

Now, Chelsea is going to start another Champions league mission on Tuesday (15 September) when they take on Porto in their first game of the season. Chelsea owner hired former AC Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti this summer thanks to his excellent record in Europe. The Italian manager brought the prestigious Champions League title twice at AC Milan during his 8-year spell at the club. No doubt, winning a European trophy was one of the biggest reasons behind the appointment of Ancelotti.

I think, Chelsea has a very strong squad. Most importantly, there is a much-needed balance in the Blues squad and if they do not suffer much from injury later this season, then it is very possible for Chelsea to give some tough challenge to other contenders like Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester United and others.

Chelsea has some good players in the midfield: Deco, Malouda, Essien, Lampard, Ballack, while their attack boasts of two experienced strikers Anelka and Drogba. In the defense, they have inspirational Terry and Carvalho. Naturally, they have everything to give another shot to Champions league this season.
