Liverpool Moved into 2nd Place with 5-0 Rout over Aston Villa

(This entry was originally published on Monday, March 23rd, 2009)

A Steven Gerrard hat-trick handed Liverpool a 5-0 victory over Aston Villa at home on Sunday. With this victory, Liverpool moved within a point of leader Manchester United, though United has a game in hand. From 29 games, Manchester United has 65 points which could have been increased if they were not beaten by Fulham 2-0 on Saturday. Liverpool, with 64 points from 30 matches, now sits in the second place of the league table and they have revitalized their hopes of winning first premier league title in 19 years. Last week, Rafael Benitez boys routed Manchester United 4-1 on the road before thrashing Real Madrid in Champions League previous week.

With this defeat, Aston Villa’s hopes of clinching a Champions league berth for the next season seems to be fading away. Though they are still within 3 points of fourth placed Arsenal, it would be very hard for Aston Villa to close the gap on the top four.
