Kumar Sangakara: New Captain of Sri Lankan Cricket Team

(This entry was originally published on Saturday, March 14th, 2009)

Kumar Sangakara has taken over as Sri Lanka captain recently following stepping down of outgoing captain Mahela Jayawardene. In his first interview after taking over as Sri Lanka captain, Sangakara has expressed his delight to have stepped into his new role in Lankan team. The wicketkeeper batsman has said that his primary focus as team captain will be preparing for the Twenty20 world cup in England.

It has been a number of years, Sangakara has become one of the key members of Sri Lankan team. His role as vice captain during Jayawardene’s captaincy stint has been very successful as he has grown into a more matured both as a leader as well as a batsmen during this time. The most important thing is that Sangakara has developed a very close relationship with Jayawardene and that is very important for a team.

To be honest, I think, Kumar Sangakara can become a very successful captain for Sri Lanka in the years to come. He has a very good leadership skill and gets along well with other senior members like Sanath Jayasuria and young players also have lot of respect for Sangakara. Another important thing is that Sangakara has been in excellent form over the last few years with bat and it is very important for a captain to lead the team from the front. As he has been performing consistently in the last few years, leading Sri Lankan team by example would not be a big deal for Sangakara.
