IPL 2009 will be Re-scheduled to Avoid Clashes with Election Dates

(This entry was originally published on Wednesday, March 4th, 2009)

The schedule of IPL 2009 Twenty20 tournament will be changed for few matches as those matches clash with the election dates announced recently. Indian home minister P. Chidambaram recently asked IPL authority to postpone the authority so that the matches do not clash with election dates. Moreover, security is also very important here because both the events: election and IPL tournament- require high security and proving huge security for two important events would not be easy for the security forces.

However, IPL chairman Lalit Modi has said that it is not possible to postpone the tournament because of busy international cricket schedule. That is why, IPL authority is going to re-schedule some matches in order to avoid clashes with election dates. IPL authority has also said that there would not be any IPL match even on the preceding two days.

Meanwhile, Tim May, chief executive officer of the Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations, has recently asked IPL to hold talk between organizers and player representatives on security concerns. I think, this is very important to look into the security condition and ensure a full-proof security system not only for the players, but also for umpires, fans and other who are involved with IPL. Specially, yesterday’s terrorist attack on Sri Lankan team bus in Lahore, Pakistan has put forward the security issue in the forefront of the tournament.
