Football Players Get Punished for Bringing Success

(This entry was originally published on Thursday, March 5th, 2009)

Maldives is not a big name in world football and even a decade back, Maldives was not a power in South Asian football. However, things have been changed pretty rapidly and Maldives has emerged as a football powerhouse in South Asian region. In 2008, Maldives national football team clinched the title of South Asian Football Federation and there is no doubt, Maldives football team has shown biggest prospect among the South Asian countries.

However, Maldives national team footballers are now facing financial problem. Players receive a monthly salary of $389 each and even they are not getting paid this amount for the last five months. Football Association of Maldives (FAM) said that Ministry of Youth and Sports has created the problem.

Well, it does not matter who creates the problem. The question is that why the problem has been created and why the players, who have been brining considerable success for their country over the last few years, are now in despair. There is no doubt, Maldives football lacks professionalism and their football would start to suffer from this if their government does not take any effective initiative now.
