Cricket is not a popular game in USA yet, but still there is a high quality cricket ground which is located in Fontana, California. In fact, the Fontana field is considered to be the best cricket ground in the country. Initiated by a Pakistani-born doctor, Asif Ahmad, the ground features four turf wickets in the centre of the field, three turf pitches for net practice, two concrete pitches for winter season and a pavilion set up above the ground level allowing cricketers clear view of the ground.
Before making the wickets, Asif Ahmad visited Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) and Lahore’s Gaddafi Cricket Ground to collect clay samples and then ventured into his own cricket field in Fontana, California. Centre wickets as well as the practice wickets are of high quality. The 1,200 sq. ft. pavilion includes all the facilities for the cricket teams.
Asif Ahmad used to play cricket while studying in medical school, but he missed his favorite game since he moved to USA in 1985 and that is why, he wanted to have a field of his own and start a cricket academy in USA. Former test cricket of Sri Lanka, Mumtaz Yosuf, coached young cricketers in the academy which is situated in a five-acre land in Fontana, California which is one-hour’s drive from Los Angles. Asif’s wife Nina Ahmed is also involved in the cricket academy where the couple’s two songs Shakeel Ahmed and Salman Ahmed are getting prepared for first class cricket.
