Arsenal progressed to the quarter final of Champions League 2008-09, defeating Roma on a 1-1 (7–6p) aggregate in the first knock-out round of the competition. Arsenal went in to the game with a 1-0 advantage of the first leg, but failed to hold on to the lead as they were beaten by the home side 1-0 as Brazilian defender Juan scored for Roma. So, the match entered into the extra time, but neither side could score a match deciding goal in the 30 minutes. Then came the nail-biting tie-breaker phase in which Arsenal defeated Roma 7-6 in a mouth-watering affair. In the first five shots, the score was 4-4 with Vucinic missing for Roma and Eduardo missing for Arsenal. Then in the sudden-death, both sides scored in the first two shots, but Tonetto failed to score in the third, while Arsenal’s Diaby scored it to ensure Arsenal’s berth in the quarter final.

Both sides missed a number of chances in the match. Though Arsenal is through in the quarter final, their performance was not satisfactory at all. They were not strong enough in the midfield Fabregas was missed throughout the match. Now, let us see if Wenger boys can make it to the semi final in the competition in what would be a satisfactory performance for the Gunners, given their recent form in evidence.
