Arsenal Moved into Top Four with 4-0 Win over Blackburn Rovers

(This entry was originally published on Sunday, March 15th, 2009)

Arsenal pulled off their biggest premier league win this season as they routed Blackburn Rovers 4-0 at home on Saturday. Arsenal dominated throughout the match and took lead in the second minute of the match thanks to an own goal by Blackburn defender Andre Ooijer. Theo Walcott sent a cross from the right before Arshavin’s goal-bound shot deflected off Ooijer to reach the net.

Arsenal was leading by 1-0 at the half time, but their record signing Andrei Arshavin scored his first goal in Arsenal shirt in the second half when he dribbled past Danny Simpson and scored from a tough angle. Arsenal got their third goal when Arshavin’s another goal-bound shot was blocked by Blackburn keeper Paul Robinson before falling it on substitute Emmanuel Eboue’s way and Eboue did not make any mistake to slot it past the goalkeeper with three minutes off the time. Arsenal added the fourth in the injury time when Eboue scored his second goal from a penalty kick after Carlos Vela was illegally tackled by Martin Olsson in the box.

With this victory, Arsenal moved up to the fourth place in the league table, while Aston Villa, who are now at fifth place, could retain the fourth place with a victory over Tottenham Hotspur today.
