Javier Saviola: Champions League is the Prime Target of Real Madrid

(This entry was originally posted in this blog on December 6, 2008 and the information is based on that time.)

Real Madrid’s Argentine striker Javier Saviola has recently said that Real Madrid’s main target is to win the Champions League title. After winning La Liga title in two seasons on a row, Saviola thinks, Real Madrid now needs to become the best in Europe. The striker also thinks that Real Madrid can make a strong bid for Champions League, besides continuing their title defense campaign at home.

Real Madrid will face arch-rival Barcelona next week. To Javier Saviola, Real Madrid must play well in the important match against Barcelona. He thinks, the Barcelona match is a must win match for his club.

Goal.com reported:

“After winning the league for two years running, the best thing that can happen is to be amongst the best in Europe. We must seek that without ignoring La Liga.”

“It is a very important game and one in which we must play well. We cannot drop any more points and definitely not in our own stadium,” he opined.

Real Madrid is the defending champion in La Liga for the last two seasons. However, their performance so far this season has not been impressive. With striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy out with injury for a long time, Real Madrid is now under pressure. Real Madrid takes the fourth place in the league standing at this moment and it would be very difficult for Real Madrid to defend their title this season in La Liga.
