January 2009 Transfer Rumor: Chelsea Interested in Wigan Striker Amr Zaki

(This entry was originally published in this blog December 2008 and it is based on the information of that time.)

This is still a rumor and there is no doubt. British tabloid The Independent reported that Chelsea coach Luiz Felipe Scolari has been impressed by the top-of-the-form Wigan Athletic striker Amr Zaki. You already know Scolari wants to sign a new striker in January transfer window. Earlier, I wrote about Chelsea’s interest in Portuguese striker Orlando Sa.

According to The Independent, Chelsea is now ready to launch a £6 million bid for Amr Zaki during January transfer window. No doubt, Zaki is enjoying a good time in his opening season in English premier league. He joined Wigan Athletic on loan from El Zamalek during Summer 2008. Amr Zaki already scored 8 goals from 12 appearances for Wigan and currently secures second spot in the goal scorers’ list jointly with Robinho and Cristiano Ronaldo. So, there is no doubt, Chelsea manager Scolari has been impressed by the scoring spree of the 25-year-old Egyptian striker. Even for Egypt national team, Zaki scored 29 goals in 48 matches.

I do not know whom Chelsea is going to sign in January, Orlando Sa or Amr Zaki, but one thing seems to be for sure that Chelsea is going to land a young striker who would not cost a huge chunk of money from their account.
