Chelsea Transfer News: Defender Alex Looks to Leave Chelsea in Winter Transfer Window

(This entry was originally published in this blog December 2008 and it is based on the information of that time.)

Chelsea defender Alex wants to leave the West London club during January transfer window. The Brazilian international could not win regular place in the Chelsea starting line up ever since he came back after completing his three-year loan spell at PSV Eindhoven. In fact, he got only 12 appearances for Chelsea so far this season. The defender is featured occasionally for Chelsea, mainly as a back up for Captain John Terry and Ricardo Carvalho.

So, Alex has enough reasons to feel the temptation of moving away from Chelsea, looking for more first team football. He joined Chelsea in 2004, but spent three years at PSV Eindhoven due to problems concerning work permit. There are number of European clubs who are interested to sign the 26-year-old defender and Greek club Panathinaikos is currently leading the race. Reports also have it in the media that Italian giant AC Milan and Spanish club Sevilla have also set their sights on the defender who can still serve at least 5 or 6 more years at his best, taking his current age into account.

Sky Sports reported:

“I told Chelsea a few days ago that I wanted to leave,” Alex is quoted as saying in The Sun.

“There are many options. But I have to think them through and see if Chelsea will let me leave in January.”

Well, there is no doubt that Ricardo Carvalho and John Terry are playing perhaps at their prime at this moment, and they have already set a formidable partnership in the central defense. However, Chelsea should not forget the team went though a number of injury problems over the last one year and for an injury pronged squad, it is very necessary to have a quality back up like Alex. In fact, both Terry and Carvalho missed several weeks of action due to their respective injuries. Now, let us see if Chelsea can manage to keep Alex at Stamford Bridge, giving assurance of more first team football.
