India-England 5th ODI 2008: Live Updates

India will take on England in the fifth ODI of the already-decided series. The match will take place at the Barabati Stadium, Cuttack tomorrow (26 November 2008). With India already clinching the series 4-0, the fifth ODI seems to have no importance. Having said that, India might set their new target to whitewash England in the series in what would guide them to reach their ultimate target of becoming no. 1 team in world cricket. No doubt, white wash over England would take India more closure to the no. 1 spot of ODI ranking. The best result England can expect in the series is to make it 4-3 in what would resurrect their lackluster form. So, still you can find some importance of the remaining three matches.

India has been in an excellent form so far in the series with almost all their players are currently in good form. In the top order, Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir are scoring with sheer consistency, while Yuvraj Singh is leading the Indian middle order successful. The batsman scored two back-to-back centuries in the first two matches in the series and played a crucial role in the fourth ODI too. The likes of Suresh Raina have strengthened the Indian batting line up, while Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is carrying out his responsibility with sheer success. All rounder Yusuf Pathan has bolstered Indian batting line up. Pacers are bringing up early breakthroughs and spinners are doing their job pretty well for India.

So, England, on the other hand, has found the task very tough so far in the series. Their batsmen have been struggling against Indian spinners. Well, the good thing about England team is that their batsmen played comparatively better against Indian spinners in the fifth ODI. You may claim that Indian spinners were having problem to grip the ball in the fourth match because of rain and wet outfield. However, still I think, England batsmen showed very good resistance against Indian bowlers in the match. For England, they have nothing to lose in the series anymore. So, they can play inspiration cricket for the remaining three matches in the series.

However, the main problem of England team seems to be the bowling strength. Pacers like James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Andrew Flintoff are doing well, but they could not yet dominate over the Indian batsmen. Moreover, they do not have a quality spinner like Ashley Giles. Lack of a quality spinner has become a big problem for England team.

India might bring some changes in the squad in order to give other members of the squad some opportunities. I guess, India might feature Irfan Pathan and Virat Kohli in the remaining three matches in the series. Spinner Pragyan Ojha might be given one or two chances. I am not saying that all of them will be given a chance in the fifth ODI. Rather, they might be given one or two chances in the upcoming three matches.

India is favorite for the 5th ODI too, but considering England’s performance in the fourth match, I think, England could take a stern test of Indian team who are aspiring to become the best team in the world. So, I am expecting a competitive match in the fifth ODI.
