Real Madrid Moved to Second Position of La Liga with 2-1 Derby Win over Atletico Madrid

Real Madrid moved up to the second position of Spanish La Liga point table with 16 points from 7 matches after a crucial 2-1 victory over cross-town rivals Atletico Madrid. It was of a typical derby match with lots of turns and twists involving in it. Ruud van Nistelrooy put Real Madrid ahead in the first minute the match, Atletico equalized thanks to a goal from Simao Sabrosa in the 90th minute. There was hardly anyone who could think off a result other than a draw in the match at that moment, but the reality is really different from what many thought about. An injury-time penalty goal from Gonzalo Higuain ensured Real Madrid three points from the match away at Vicente Calderon Stadium.

However, the victory took a heavy toll on Real Madrid as their Dutch strikers Ruud van Nistelrooy was sent off in the first half, just nine minutes before Atletico had turned into a 10-men team with defender Luis Perea picking up a red card in the 30th minutes. After Nistelrooy’s opening goal, Real Madrid had a number of chances in the first half that could have doubled the lead. Franco hit the crossbar, while Van Nistelrooy had a goal disallowed on offside in the 21st minutes, though television replays showed it was a right goal. Real Madrid goal keeper Iker Casillas denied Atletico a number of times during the second half. Real Madrid now has to face Juventus in an away fixture of Europe on Tuesday. Let us see if Real Madrid successfully gets over the challenge of the Old Lady of Turin.
