Chelsea Defender Ricardo Carvalho Injured out for a Month with Knee Injury

Chelsea centre back Ricardo Carvalho has been out of action for a month with a knee injury sustained in Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Manchester Untied. The knee injury forced him out on the 12th minute of the match at Stamford Bridge and the team medial staff confirmed later on that he would need to take rest for a month as a scan showed damage to the medial ligament in his left knee. He does not need to undergo any surgery, but the Portugal international needs to give his left knee some rest in order to shake off the injury. Because of the knee injury, Carvalho will miss at least three premier league matches, two Champions League encounters and Tuesday’s third round Carling Cup fixture at Portsmouth. Carvalho is expected to be back in action in the home match against Liverpool.

Chelsea midfield star Deco, who joined Chelsea from Barcelona during Summer, is also out of action since he suffered thigh muscle pull up. Deco has been Chelsea most impressive player of this season so far with an impact in the midfield. Deco is expected to be available for the Aston Villa match on 5 October. No doubt, it would not be so easy for manager Luiz Felipe Scolari to come to terms with the injury of Ricardo Carvalho as he does not have too many options for the centre back position of Chelsea defense. With Michael Essien out for a long spell, it seems that Chelsea is going to face the similar situation of last season when Avram Grant had to contend with a number of injuries in the halfway of the season.

Chelsea is reportedly going to sign Miniero to fill up the midfield void created by Essien injury. In the centre back position, Scolari might feature Alex who came on as replacement of Ricardo Carvalho in the drawn match against Manchester United. Branislav Ivanovic has remained untested since he joined the club in a move from Lokomotiv Moscow for £9 million. So, against Portsmouth he might get some action for Chelsea.
