Carling Cup 2009: Results of Third Round Matches 1

All the premier league hot favorites got off to a good start in Carling Cup 2009 as three of the ‘Big Four’ clubs pulled off easy victory in the third round encounters on 23 September 2008. All the matches were evening kick offs and saw the favorites Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool going through to the fourth round of the tournament. No doubt, Arsenal got the easiest victory of the night as they outclassed Sheffield United at Emirates Stadium thanks to the irregular striker Carlos Vela’s hat trick.

At Anfield, home side Liverpool won 2-1 over League One team Crewe. Liverpool went ahead thanks to 15-minute strike by Daniel Agger from a free kick. However, Michael O’Connor equalized for Crewe ten minutes later. Then Liverpool got the winning goal thanks to a Lucas Leiva header in the second half. Liverpool played well, but could not show as much dominance as Arsenal did over Sheffield United.

Manchester United also started off well in the league cup campaign as the Ferguson boys defeated premier league rivals Middlesbrough 3-1 at home. However, Brazilian Rodrigo Possebon picked up a serious injury in his debut match for Manchester United. The good news for Manchester United fans is that their star players Cristiano Ronaldo found his scoring form as the winger put United ahead in the 24th minutes before half time. Then Johnson scored the equalizer for Middlesbrough in the 55th minute, before Giggs and Nani made the score 3-1 to ensure Manchester United’s place in the fourth round of Carling Cup 2009.
