Host Bangladesh is going to take on India in the last group stage match of Kitply Cup 2008 tomorrow (12 June 2008) at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka. The match is very important to decide the two finalists of the tournament. Bangladesh cricket team lost the first match to Pakistan by 70 runs, while India started with a convincing 140-run victory over Pakistan in the tournament. So, apparently Bangladesh has to win the match in order to reach the final. Even a victory tomorrow would ensure a final spot for Bangladesh because Pakistan’s humiliating defeat to India suffered their run rate badly. Still, they have better run rate than Bangladesh, but even a one run victory against India would ensure a final spot for Bangladesh. No doubt, it is good news for Bangladesh because they just need a victory now, without thinking much about run rate.

No doubt, it would not be easy for Bangladesh to defeat India and win the ticket of the final. However, it is also true that Bangladesh will have home advantage in the match and will look to win the match. Bangladesh was not impressive in the first match at all. Their top order batting line up looked fragile and could not put up any competition in the match. Bangladeshi bowlers played better picking all of the ten wickets of Pakistan conceding 233 runs within 40 overs. However, batting seems to be the only problem for Bangladesh side. Especially their top order batting line up lacks consistency and experience. I do not know why BCB is always introducing new players even before they flourish their potential at domestic cricket and get matured enough to play at this level of cricket. Experience is very important at this level and you can see that not many of the 11 players who played against Pakistan are experienced.

For India, they may not have to think about their final berth because only a defeat by more than 218 runs would halt India reach the final. You know that it is more than something unlikely to happen. India played excellently well in the first match yesterday thanks to their magnificent opening pair and an excellent spell from pacer Praveen Kumar.

India’s main strength would be their batting line up with two inform opening batsmen: Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag, who contributed a lot to India’s triumph over Pakistan with their 155 opening stand. However, India’s middle order batting line up also looks formidable with the presence of Yuvraj Singh, Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Yusuf Pathan and in the end bowling all rounder Irfan Pathan increases the batting depth of their batting line up. Indian pacers are doing very well for the last few tournaments. Though Sreesanth is absent out with injury, Ishant Sharma, Irfan Pathan and Piyush Chawla are in good form. Left spinner Pragyan Ojha might be given a chance against Bangladesh which would be his debut for national side. The bowlers played very well in the recently concluded Indian premier league. Ishant Sharma suffered a minor injury in the match against Pakistan, but the pacer has already recovered from it, but he might be rested against Bangladesh in order to bring in debutant pacer Manpreet Gony, who also had an excellent tournament in IPL. In that case, India might introduce two debutant against Bangladesh.

Bangladesh captain Mohammad Ashraful, who scored a well-played 56 against Pakistan in the first match, said that they had play for each of the Indian players; not just for the two openers. Tamim Iqbal and Shahriar Nafees are expected to continue their opening stand, because both the batsmen have recent success, though Bangladesh opening stand did not flick in the first match. In the middle order, Raqibul Hasan, Alok Kapali, Mushfiqur Rahim and all rounder Mahmudullah will be there along with captain Ashraful to serve the Bangladesh batting line up. Actually, Bangladesh batting has a good depth as well because pacer Mashrafe Mortaza and left arm spinner Abdur Razzak can also chip in with small but effective innings in the end. However, the main problem of Bangladesh batting line up is consistency. Most of the time, they remain out of form and very few times they flick together. Bangladesh proved that whenever four or five players play well together, they stand up against any side in world cricket, what they showed in 2007 World Cup cricket defeating India and South Africa. However, since then, Bangladesh did not win against any test playing nations. So, consistency is what Bangladesh lacks and if they want to play in the final of Kitply Cup 2008, they must be at their prime against India. Another problem for Bangladesh is that most of the players are inexperienced.

Bowling now seems to be the main strength of Bangladesh team. Mashrafe Mortaza leads the pace attack, while Abdur Razzak spearheads their spin attack. Under 19 player Dolar Mahmud played his debut match against Pakistan and he is expected to be the third pacer, while Shahadat Hossain will pair with Mashrafe with the new ball. Razzak will get support from off spinner Mahmudullah and leg spinner Alok Kapali. So, overall Bangladesh team seems to be balanced. Having said that, still consistency is the problem Bangladeshi fans should worry for.

So, the fans on both sides are eagerly waiting for the match. NEO Cricket and BTV will show the match live for the cricket fans. There is no doubt, India is favorite for the match and considering the current form of Indian team, it can be claimed that it would be more than hard for Bangladesh to win against India. However, Bangladesh team can take inspiration from their previous two victories over India and can gear up themselves to win another match against India. Now, let us see if Bangladesh can upset India or India continues their excellent form in the tournament.
