Jelena Jankovic Reaches the Semi Final of Australian Open 2008

Jelena Jankovic got into the semi final of Australian Open 2008 with a hard-fought 6-3, 6-4, victory over seventh seed Serena Williams. However, the task was not easy for Jankovic as Serena had a lot of resistance in the match. It took every bit of Jankovic’s mental strength to secure the victory and make it to the semi final of Australian Open 2008. This is the first time; Jankovic has got into the semi final of Australian Open.

Serena Williams pushed the third seed all the way putting on huge competition it both the sets. However, it proved less when the defending champion got out of the tournament.

The Press Association reported:

Williams` inconsistencies were highlighted in the second game of the second set when at 15-40 down on serve, she produced a fine cross-court backhand winner before hitting a tame return into the net to fall 2-0 behind.

But she broke back immediately when mercilessly dispatching a weak Jankovic return only for the Serb to return the compliment with a backhand pass down the line.

The third seed then relinquished her advantage when she hit a return long before both players took medical time-outs.

Jelena Jankovic had not been at her great from at the tournament before the match. She started off though a marathon first round match in Australian Open 2008. However, Jankovic looked pretty much confident today while taking on Serena Williams. It is true that Jankovic was not in dominant form in the match, but the way she played proved enough to get over Serena Williams.

Jelena Jankovic will meet either Maria Sharapova or Justine Henin in semi final of Australian Open 2008. So, the Serbian has to put on a bit more consistency against either of these two in the semi final. The victory over Serena Williams must give her the confidence and inspire the third seed to go further in the tournament.
