David Nalbandian Progressed to the Second Round of Australian Open 2008

David Nalbandian cruised into the second round of Australian Open 2008 with an emphatic victory over Australian wild card Robert Smeets, winning 6-1 6-1 7-6 (7-3) in straight three sets today. Nalbandian bruised aside the fears about his fitness, showing sheer dominance in the match. However, the Argentine had to face some strong challenges in the final set. He also admitted that he had lost a bit of focus on in the final set which, according to him, won luckily.

The Herald Sun reported:

``I played very good the first two sets but lost a bit of focus in the third,'' Nalbandian said.

``Smeets served and played a lot better but luckily I was able to finish the match in three sets.

``I was feeling very good, I don't have a problem with my back any more, but it was important not to have a long match.''

Nalbandian now play Peter Luczak in the second round of Australian Open 2008. Peter Luczak defeated Mariano Zabaleta in the first round showdown. albandian is one of the strongest contenders of Australian Open 2008. He is the only player who has continuous success against world no. 1 Roger Federer, with an 8-8 head-to-head record. Last year, Federer lost twice in the hard court against Nalbandian. Tennis fans could get to experience another David Nalbandian vs Roger Federer match in the semi final of Australian Open 2008.

    Nalbandian's win-loss record pre 2005 was 5-2 and post 2005, it has been 3-6, nothing to be proud of.
