David Ferrer in Australian Open Tennis 2008

David Ferrer is the fifth seed of Australian Open 2008. This Spaniard has seen a successful year in 2007 reaching his first grand slam singles semi final in U.S. Open 2007. Though he has been in professional tennis since 2000, he started showing his talent and skill in the grand slam tournaments for last two years. David Ferrer has won three WTA titles last year. However, he could not yet play any grand slam final. Considering his improving performances, I think, he can make it to the final of any of the four grand slam tournaments. Ferrer started 2008 not in a great style after failing to reach the semi final of Heineken Open being defeated to unseeded Julian Benneteau in the quarter final.

NZ Herald reported:

Ferrer's usually dominant return game was noticeably absent. He won just nine points on the impressive Benneteau's serve all night.

Ferrero dropped the first set against Massu but fought back to take out one of the best matches of the tournament in just over two-and-a-half hours.

"Last year was different," Ferrero said.

"He played a good match and I played so bad, so bad. This year was totally different. We played a good battle, we both played good tennis."

Ferrer might face tenth seed David Nalbandiain in the fourth round. However, reaching the fourth round would not be that much hard for him. From the 4th round, Ferrer has to face some strong challenges. Novak Djokovic or Lleyton Hewitt or Marat Safin or Marcos Baghdatis could be his possible quarter final opponent. Neither of them is so easy to beat. If he can survive in the quarter final and go into the semi final, then Roger Federer might be his next opponent before reaching the final.

No doubt, the road is not so easy, but the way he has been improving and proving his worth, it is not impossible for David Ferrer to reach the final of Australian Open 2008. Now, let us see if he can continue his prime form this year.
