Australian Open 2008 Women’s Singles: Many Challengers to Win the Title

If someone asks you that if Australian Open 2008 will bean exciting tournament, then what will you say in reply? You may reply that ‘wait and see till 27 January.’ Well, this is perhaps the best answer. However, sometimes it also varies on the draw of the tournament. We can take U.S. Open, for example, where Henin, the Williamses, Ivanovic and Jankovic were drawn in the same quarter- meaning only one of these strong contenders could make it to the semi finals.

So, many things depend on the draw of the tournament. The draw of women’s singles of Australian Open 2008 is not that much tidy. However, world no. 5 Maria Sharapova has something to worry as she is likely to face Lindsay Davenport in the second round. Davenport came back in action seven months after giving birth a baby. If it is not hard enough then note- Sharapova’s most probable quarter final opponent could be Justine Henin. Well, the fans of Serena Williams may feel relief that Serena would not have to face Justine Henin in the quarter final. Last year, the two top seeds faced each other in three consecutive grand slam quarter finals, which were not expected at all.

Tennis.com reported:

This time, Sharapova will have to worry more about established threats like Davenport and Henin, but indicated that the shoulder woes which dogged last year have subsided. “I had a really good off-season, injury-free, I worked really hard,” she said. “It was great to be able to play tennis for such a long period of time without feeling concerned or worried about getting injured.”

So, it seems that Maria Sharapova is fit enough and also very confident to win the title of Australian Open. Actually, there are many contenders in women’s singles. There is no Roger Federe at this moment in the women’s singles. So, it is open for at least five o six players. May be it is good for the fans to enjoy almost all the matches as all of them have the same attraction. Now, let us see if Serena Williams can defend her title, or any newcomer comes in and win her first grand slam title.
