Women’s World Cup 2007: Germany Squad

Women’s world cup 2007 is coming nearer as the tournament is set to be started from 10 September 2007. This year the tournament will be held in China. Women’s world cup 2007 will be the fifth tournament of women’s world cup. In the tournament 16 teams will be playing in four groups. Each group includes four teams and from each group top two teams will enter into the quarter final round.

Germany is now the defending champion of women’s world cup and they are still favorite to win the title of 2007 women’s world cup. Germany has played in every world cup competition. Germany never missed their semi final appearance in women’s world cup except the 1999 world cup in USA.

If you analyze the recent performance of the participating teams of women’s world cup 2007, you have to admit that Germany’s performance is much more impressive compared to other teams. In the women’s world cup qualifying competition, Germany won each of the 8 matches scoring 31 goals in total in which Birgit Prinz, Germany’s most successful striker ever, scored 8 goals.

German coach Silvia Neid has recently declared the final squad of Germany for the forthcoming world cup 2007. Most of the players of German women’s football team are experienced and they are expected to lead Germany to win their second consecutive world cup title. Striker Birgit Prinz is the most capped player of the side and she is the highest goal scorer of Germany. Birgit Prinz is now though to be one of the legends of women’s football. In 2003 women’s world cup, Birgit Prinz scored highest seven goals and she won both Golden ball and Golden shoe of that tournament. She won FIfa Women’s Football of the Year award for three times in 2003, 2004 and 2005. Birgit Prinz won the German Women's Footballer of the Year award for seven times from 2001-2007.

Moreover, German women’s world cup squad includes some more veteran footballers. There are seven footballers who have more than 100 match appearances for Germany including star midfielder Renate Lingor, defender Kerstin Stegemann. To tell the truth the current German women’s football squad looks more strong and experienced than their world cup winning 2003 squad.

Germany will play in Group A where they will face their arch rival England, Argentina and Japan. I think, Germany will go into the quarter final round as the Group champion. However, I think the team lacks some young players in striking position. In striking position, one or two young players is needed to keep a balance in the squad. However, I think, Germany has the capability to win the women’s world cup 2007 title in China.

I am giving the names of the members of German squad of women’s world cup below:
