Women’s World Cup 2007: Canada Squad

Canada women’s football team has showed some memorable performance in the last Women’s world cup in USA in 2003. Canada was one of the four semi-finalists in 2003. Now, ahead of the upcoming Women’s world cup 2007, Canadian fans are dreaming of something bigger. Canada is now the no. 9 ranked football playing country according to Fifa. After the tremendous performance in 2003 world cup, Canada is now considered as one of the strong contenders of women’s football. Canada could not even get the ticket of quarter final round before 2003 women’s world cup in USA.

Coach Even Pellerud has recently unveiled 21-member Canadian squad for the upcoming Women’s World Cup 2007. The squad is a combination of some youth and experienced footballers. Even Pellerud is happy with his team.

CBC reported:

"The selected team is more experienced at an international level than the previous World Cup team," Pellerud said. "We have a good balance of experience and youth."

Canada has some experienced players who have appeared for Canada for several years. Some of the notable players of Canada women’s world cup squad are Christine Sinclair, Amy Walsh and Kara Lang. Canada’s recent performance is satisfactory as they won the bronze medal beating Mexico in this year’s Pan American games.

Canada will play in Group C where they have to face former world cup winner Norway, Australia and Ghana. It is expected that with Norway, Canada will be the second team from this group to go into the quarter final stage. However, Ghana is a strong contender and has the capability to cause any upset. Australia women’s football team’s recent performance is also satisfactory.

The interesting thing is that Norwegian Coach Even Pellerud will have to face his own country in the Group stage. Even Pellerud played one match for Norway national team but as a coach he has much more fame. He led Norway women’s team in 1991 world cup and UEFA European Championship and in both tournaments Norway became runner up. In the next world cup in 1995 in Sweden, Norway won their first and only world cup title under his coaching. In 1993, Norway won the UEFA European Championship under the coaching of Even Pellerud.

I think, Canada team is capable of showing some impressive performance in Fifa Women’s World Cup 2007. They should at least qualify for the quarter final round. Let us see to how far Canada can go this time under the coaching of Even Pellerud.
