A Series of Upsets Seen in Women’s Singles of Wimbledon 2007

Wimbledon 2007 has seen a series of upsets. Especially in the women’s singles it was all about upsets. First of all, the victory of Venus Williams has been an upset because she was not in the favorite list of the fans and critics before the tournament was stated. Besides, there were some other big upsets seen in every round of the women’s singles. Let’s see the big upsets of the tournament.

The current world no. 1 Justine Henin lost to 18th seed Marion Bartoli in the semi-final round was one of the notable upsets of the tournament. Earlier, Marion Bartoli caused some other upsets including her fourth round win over Jelena Janković, the third seeded player.

World no. 2 Maria Sharapova has experienced an early exit from the tournament being lost to Venus Williams in the fourth round. Sharapova was though to be one of the favorites in the tournament. However, Venus appeared with her top form and Sharapova was barely anything to do against her.

Moreover, another significant upset was done by 14th ranked Nicole Vaidišová. Her victory over 4th seed Amelie Mauresm came as a surprise to the tennis fans. There were some other minor upsets in the women’s singles but those I mentioned yet were much highlighted during the competition.

Upset is very common to all international sports. However, the amount of upsets seen in Wimbledon 2007 especially in women’s singles seems that new stars are coming with their skill and passion and it shows a threat to the current stars.
