Prize Money of Wimbledon Tennis 2007

Wimbledon is one of the four major Grand Slam Tennis tournaments in the world but it is special for two reasons. Firstly, it is the only major grass court tournament in the world. Playing in grass court is not an easy matter. The players have to work extremely hard to shine in grass court. Secondly, Wimbledon organizers are very strict about dress code. The players have to wear white dress.

There is little room for sexy hot colorful dresses. You know that the British people are more formal than people of many countries. So, in Wimbledon, there are many formalities which may not satisfy most people.

I guess that many of you are eager to know about the prize money of Wimbledon 2007. You will be happy to know that Wimbledon 2007 organizers have removed the discrimination between men and women in terms of prize money. This year, the winners of the singles events of both the men’s and ladies’ will receive the same amount of prize money.

I am quoting from the official website of Wimbledon Tennis:

The total prize money will be £11,282,710 (up 8.7% on £10,378,710 in 2006).

The Men’s Champion’s purse has increased by 6.9% (£655,000 in 2006), while that of the Ladies' has increased by 12% (£625,000 in 2006). These prizes reflect both a higher than average increase being awarded this year to the Champions, runners-up, and losing semi-finalists and, secondly, the decision, announced in February, to equalise the Ladies' prize money.

The equal prize money decision has not adversely impacted on the overall Men’s prize money, the Singles of which has been increased by 4%, the same as in 2006. The Ladies' Singles event has increased by 19.8% on last year.

Included in the overall figure above are the ‘per diem’ payments (£726,070 in 2007) paid to all competitors, to help with the cost of accommodation, travel and other expenses – especially important for the younger players at the beginning of their careers.

It is very good that Wimbledon 2007 is going to have equal prize money both for the male and female players. May be it is time that Wimbledon becomes more colorful in dress.
