Rupert Murdoch: The Next Internet King?

Rupert Murdoch is very successful in the traditional media. He understands newspapers, TV channels and even the movie industry. His media empire is spread in several continents. Rupert Murdoch is very strong in the US and UK. He is also doing so well in Australia and in Asia.

Even in Internet, Rupert Murdoch is not doing that bad until now. My Space is one of the top ten visited websites in the world. Until now, Murdoch was fairly pleased with the traditional media. It seems that now he is very much interested about Internet too.

So, Murdoch’s company is now going to buy Photobucket.

India Times wrote:

MySpace, part of Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. has reached a preliminary deal to acquire Photobucket, the world's top photo-sharing site, for around $250 million in cash, a source familiar with the deal said.

Photobucket functions like a kind of Swiss bank for depositing and transmitting photos, helping Web users post their photos on other social networking sites, instead of trying to keep the users locked up on its own site.

Besides MySpace, Photobucket is popular on sites such as Facebook, Bebo, Friendster, eBay, Craigslist, Blogger and Xanga.

Mr. Murdoch is a successful businessman and I can see that he is very smart. Photobucket is a great website and it has a lot of dedicated and regular users. The only thing I am not happy is that $250 million is not a great sum for Photobucket. I wish to see a better price for it.

The Compete.com blog has an interesting post today that profiles Photobucket and shows just what $250-300M gets you. Photobucket is doing well and it is cool to see what MySpace is paying for. Check out the post: http://blog.compete.com/2007/05/08/photobucket-myspace-acquisition/
