Though it is followed by all the marathon runners, it was not so easy to make people understand that this taking rest is necessary for a runner to get back his or her strength for the next competition. Be realistic is right. How do you not list Catherine Ndereba on your list, the only woman to win 2 gold medals in the marathon at the World Championships (Paris and Osaka), and the only woman to win Boston 4 times? Add in an Olympic silver for Athens and a silver at the 2005 World Championships in Helsinki. She is the most consistent women’s marathoner in history with 12 sub 2:26 performances, 3 sub 2:20s, 9 wins and 7 second place finishes. She's also the former world record-holder.

Grammatical and spelling errors aside, this list is far from complete, or accurate. Do your research before posting "[your] greatest marathon runners in the world".
This is why you have to be leary of the interweb. Anyone can make a website.

  5. Your list is mere wishful thinking. Everybody knows how Kenyans have totally dominated the Marathons around the world in recent years!

    To Techtainement list!

It is a fact that you can't have a complete list among 10 choices, but if you include Abebe Bilika and Paul Tergat in the list, it doesn't make sense for you to leave out Haile! For one, the main Haile's rival was Tergat, but Haile succeeded in taking all Paul's records and even lowering thye Marathon time to 2 hrs 3 min 59 seconds! (You need to update).

I think everyone is getting too worked up - I to wondered where names such as Haile... but I think the main problem here is the author should have titled it 'MY top xx marathon runners' as surely this is what the list is being as soooo many greats are missing.

Which list are we talking about this is not a list of best runners? We need some good knowledgeable people to come up with the list. Kenya, Ethiopia, Morocco, Algeria etc., have been producing top runners for some time now. We need to have more representation of them. Not all but some of these runners who are considered best in this list are from the past with slow finishing times compared to the new record holders. Abebe Bikila and Evans Rutto are good choices but many more are missing.

Sammy Wanjiru? Entered 5 marathons before his untimely death, and won all 5. 100% win ratio; Fukuoka, Beijing Olympics, London, Chicago, Chicago ... beat deep fields each time. He won the Olympic gold medal in record time, in absolutely brutal conditions. Insane talent! We will miss you Sammy!

Patrick Makau Musyoki? Back to back wins in Berlin + Rotterdam. Current WR holder (not wind aided): 2:03:38. 4:43 average per mile. Blazing fast!! Has run 8 sub-hour half-marathons.

  42. Whoever told you guys the top runners of the 2012 olympic were kenyan is twisting words. Your source must be wikipedia but wikipedia says that the combined total medals gained in the 2008 and 2012 olympics is 25. You also look dum because there was no Olympics in 2011 so how can you just say they were the best when they didn't even compete and compare with the best at the Olympics. If you have pride, that's good, just don't feed false information to everyone. Also, if you guys didn't notice, during the preliminary rounds before the real Olympics, they grouped all the Ethiopians together in order to eliminate most of them. In one race, Ethiopians got 1st-6th place, then 8 to 10th, i think a kenyan got 11h and so on. This way, there were less Ethiopians in the Olympics. I think this list is just trying to put out those old Marathon runners most people don't know or remember because they are his/her own favorite runners and he want's to popularize them.

  44. The guy who said that Kenya had top 25 runners in 2011 is twisting words. First of all, there were no Olympics in 2011 so how can you say a runner is the best if he didn't compete and win against the best. Second of all, he got his information from wikipedia and twisted it up. Wikipedia says Kenya has 25 medals between 2008 and 2012 olympics. This doesn't mean it has the best runners. In fact, (happy moment) Ethiopia ranked higher in the Olympics in 2012, 2004, 2000, and 1996. (Kenya won 2008 and 1992). The fact is Ethiopia is not sending out enough runners now and all the old runners (Haile Gebralise or however you spell that name) are doing worst and worst. We need new athletes.
