Ten Great White Heavyweight Boxers

By: Biplob Kishore Deb

When we watch professional heavyweight boxing matches, most of the time, we see black boxers. Mohammad Ali, Tyson, Joe Frazier, George Foreman- most of the famous heavy boxers of the last 40 years are black. You cannot find too many famous white heavyweight boxers. Here, I have made a list of 10 white boxers and almost all of them won heavyweight championship in their career. I do not want to claim that they are the greatest white boxers of all time but they had considerable success in professional boxing.

John Lawrence Sullivan

Image link: wiki

Sullivan is a legendary figure in the world boxing. He is the first modern World Heavyweight Champion. This passionate boxer once challenged any boxer in America for $500 (not a minimal amount in his time). This former heavyweight champion was famous for his coach-to-coach tour with five boxers in 1883-84 over the 136 cities and towns. It is said that he could knock out 30 boxers in that tour. Though in his time there was not any officially recognized boxing titles, Sullivan was proved to the first World heavyweight Champion by the modern authority later on as he had defeated some of the influential boxers in that time including Paddy Ryan, Charley Mitchell, Jake Kilrain and many more. His match with Jack Kilrain was a memorable one. He knocked out Jack Kilrain in the 75th round. His name is in the International boxing Hall of Fame.

James John Corbett

Image link: wiki

Known as ‘Gentleman Jim’, he could earn the tag of “Father of Modern Boxing”. The reasons lies behind giving him such tag were his innovative and scientific strategy and art in boxing. His greatest success came in the way of defeating the great John L Sullivan to become the World Heavyweight Champion in 1892. Out of the ring he was an actor. His autobiography was turned into a film titled ‘Gentleman Jim’ where Errol Flynn played the role of James Corbett.

Rocky Marciano

Image link: rocky

This great American heavyweight boxer was born in 1969. His greatness lies in his career record. He never got defeated defeat in his professional career. He won all of his 49 matches among which 43 were by Knock Out. He is the only boxer in the boxing history who could retire undefeated in the heavyweight division. The title of the Oscar winning movie “Rocky” was taken by his name. He started his professional career in 1947 and he was the heavyweight champion from 1952 to 1956. He has been listed at number 14 in the list of 100 Greatest Punchers of All Time by Ring magazine. Marciano worked as guest referee in USA and Canada for some time after taking retirement from professional boxing.

Primo Carnera

This Italian former World Heavyweight Champion is considered as one of the great heavyweight boxers in the history of boxing. He holds an excellent career record with 87 wins in which 70 were through knocking out. ‘The Ambling Alp’ nicknamed this boxer also went to Hollywood seeking to build up a career as actor and in some extent he got some success in acting. His role in the movie titled “A Kid For Two Farthings” was praised by many.

Robert James "Bob" Fitzsimmons

Image link: wiki

This New Zealander holds a prestigious record in the world boxing to become the first three-division world boxing champion. He won his heavyweight championship defeating the great James Corbett. In his 82 appearances in the ring he got success in 51 of them in which 44 came by knocking out his opponents. This influential figure of world boxing was named as the 8th position in the list of all time boxing’s best punchers by Ring Magazine. He is also a member of International Boxing Hall of Fame.

Jack Dempsey

Image link: wiki

Jack is another greatest heavyweight champion of all time. He was born in 1895 in America. He is also one of the famous boxers of pre war period. He held world championship from 1919 to 1926. This prominent boxer could win 62 matches amongst his 83 appearances in the professional boxing and he won 50 matches by Knock Out in which 26 were in the first round. So, it is clear enough that how much aggressive he was in the ring. His fight against George Carpentier is very famous as the first million dollar gate in the history. A Street of the Madison Square Garden is called by his name Jack Dempsey corner. His name is also listed in the International Boxing Hall OF Fame.

Tommy Morrison

Image link: wiki

Tommy Morrison had an eventful career. He won the WBO Heavyweight Championship in 1993 and could keep the title for nearly four and a half months (7 Jun 1993–29 Oct 1993). In his professional career, he fought 50 times and won 46 times (in 40 of them, he knocked out his opponents. However, he is more memorable to the people for his acting in Rocky V. He played the part of Tommy Gunn in the movie, an ungrateful champion. This performance made him very famous but unfortunately, Tommy Morrison did not have a disciplined life and got involved with drug and stayed in prison for more than one year.

Wladimir Klitschko

Image link: wiki

Wladimir Klitschko is still in action. He is now the current IBF and IBO World Heavyweight. Originally from Ukraine, he was in Germany for many years and he is a celebrity in Germany. He is now living in Beverly Hills. His height is nearly 2 meter (6' 6"). Thus, he is a giant and can overpower his opponents by using his height advantage. Quick jab and punching power- these are his main strength. He can also move quite fast in the ring. He was former WBO World Heavyweight (October 14, 2000 - March 8, 2003).

Gene Tunney

Image link: wiki

He is the legend killer!! Gene Tunney beat Jack Dempsey, one of the all time greatest heavyweights, twice. Served as a US marine in WWI, Tunney was a very skillful boxer. Aside from Jack Dempsey, he fought with famous boxers like: Tommy Loughran, Tommy Gibbons, Georges Carpentier. In his entire boxing career, he had 88 fights out of which he lost only one and made a draw in another one. This great boxer was famous for his defense skill. Tunney hold the heavyweight boxing title from 1926-1928. Tunney fought with Dempsey in 1926 and 1927. His second fight with Jack Dempsey was very famous. It was known as The Long Count Fight. Aside from fighting Tunney also starred in a movie titled The Fighting Marine.

Nikolai Valuev

Image link: wiki

I must admit that I have selected Nikolai Valuev because of his height. He is a real giant (7 feet tall). According to Wikipedia, “Valuev is the tallest and heaviest recognized champion of all time, standing at 2.13 m (7') tall and weighing as much as 150 kg (330 lb).” He is the current WBA Heavyweight Champion. In his career, he has fought 45 and won 44 of them. This Russian boxer is now 33 years old his nick name is ‘The Beast from the East’.

There are some other great white heavyweight boxing champions who could also dominate in the ring over the opponents. They are as follows:

James J. Jeffries, Marvin Hart, Jess Willard, Tommy Burns, Jack Sharkey, Max Schmeling, Max Baer, James J. Braddock, Jersey Joe Walcott, Ingemar Johansson, Jimmy Ellis, Greg Page, Francesco Damiani, Francois Botha, Vitali Klitschko, Corrie Sanders, Sergei Liakhovich, Oleg Maskaev.

These champions, for the most part, reigned when blacks were not allowed in the ring, in most of the country.

    5. But thats because pro boxing likes to handpick their black champions with "match making". Whites make up 66% of boxing olympic champions because its fair tournament style.

Stupid comment The Klitschko's have dominated a decade no excuses. The fact the Russians and Europeans did not enter the heavyweight landscape until the wall came down. Says the landscape would have been a lot different in the past if they fought.

Apparently you don't follow boxing. The 3 heavy divisions are DOMINATED by white guys. Out of the 7 belts in all 3 heavy divisions (that's 21 belts), 15 are owned by whites, 4 blacks, and a Cuban has 2. And don't try to say there's more whites in the world, like I seen someone say earlier, because the world is only made up of 19% whites.

Valuev has won ALL of his 45 fights, not 44 of 45, as was stated. Also, add Greg Page to the list of non-white boxers.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Anonymous2:22 PM

The best of that list were probably Fitzsimmons, Tunney, Jeffries, Dempsey, Marciano, Sullivan, Corbett, Jerry Quarry, George Chuvalo, Max Schmeling. Guys like Valuev haven't fought the best in the world yet. Although neither did Dempsey so who knows. Chuvalo, Quarry and Schmeling did fight the best in the world. Blacks and whites have fought in the public ring for denturies. The problem was blacks were mostly denied heavyweight title shots.

clay was the greatest he could take away any individual asset his opponent had.if they pressed he would dance,if they let him press he would slip in and back out of range before the opponent could get a look in.speed and deceptive power.the best white heavyweight on paper has to be marciano.the heavyweights at the turn of last century and previous would all have been tagged by marciano.ali as clay was the best, frazier only beat him after his layoff. No one knows how good he could have been if his license was not revoked. Here are five to the extent of my knowledge that may have been a contest for clay,in his prime. But would have all ended up losing either on points or by knockout.tyson,marciano,holmes,louis,foreman.maybe klickscho but hes just got physical prowess.and thats come with advanced knowledge and generaly evolution, its a fact humans on average are getting bigger and taller.full credit to boxers like tunney and marciano. they had great records which shows immense commitment and desire. But clay in his prime was poetry in motion and i dont think any opponent ever could have lived with him.p.s congratulations to joe calzhage what a career.

He also Knocked out Champion Archie Moore, Jersey Joe Walcott and Ezzard Charles, retiring undefeated with the belt.

Thos ehit by Rocky often had to have their welts surgically removed, if they werent put in a coma.
No one wanted to fight him.
And yet he did this as an undersized heaveyweight, fighting men all bigger than him, including Louis when both were in the 30s.

Jim Jeffries was likely the best white heavyweight ever - and probably the best heavywight ever. ddsharper is wrong when he said these fellows were champions when blacks were not allowed in the ring. At their best, most of these fellows would handle blacks as well as whites. Many did blacks.

  20. Anonymous12:17 AM

because skin colour makes a difference? you guys are pathetic. people have different skin tones due to their ancestors climate origins. Antonio inoki, a heavyweight Japanese fighter annihilated Muhammed Ali even when he was severely handicapped. Subsequently ended Ali's career. Sadly, more dark skinned people in America have lower income, so you have more dark skinned fighters today than previously. Boxing isn't exactly something most people strive for. It's something somebody without much hope to do anything else does to get by in life.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Anonymous5:00 AM

I think they are referring to race, not just skin color. They're trying to perpetuate a myth that "blacks" are better "athletes". Then they select two or three sports to prove their point, leaving out all of the sports that "whites" dominate. If you look at boxing and poverty levels during any period in the history of the sport, you will see a correlation between the two.

God damn, all you black people are so fuckin' cocky it's ridiculous. Any of these white guys would give Ali, Tyson, Barrow, or Frazier a run for their money. Ever hear about the Dempsey Roll? Or the fact that Tommy Morrison's power matched that of George Foreman in his prime? Or maybe the fact that Marciano never lost. EVER. Boxing isn't about skin color, it's about whose got the skill, the heart, and the strength to keep going.

And it's not for people who have no other hope in life like I see some dude saying up there. That's bullshit. A large amount of commitment, and heart are required to box. Boxing is for the strong, not for people who just need to get by.

  24. You can take out of that list James John Corbett, Rocky Marciano, Primo Carnera, Jack Dempsey, Wladimir Klitschko, Nikolai Valuev and anyone else of Jewish, Southern European, Black Haired Irish/British, Slavic and Native American - none of whom are accepted as part of the ideal Aryan race by Nazis and racial anthropology and are at best inferior Whites. I am a person of Black haired British ancestry and personally I do not identify as part of any imaginary White race. White supremacists only accept inferior whites when it suits them if they are not Blonde Haired Swedes.

I loved the angle about boxers are boxers...and you see more blacks now (winning) due to the quantity of blacks coming from lower socio-economic backgrounds...and fighting (literally) their way out. Interesting viewpoint.

As for the slam comments...Folks...keep your bigotry to yourself...it really doesn't show you putting your best foot forward.

boxing has always been a "career" for poor people. the majority of those white guys were poor (Dempsey was even homeless) and after the great depression had all but faded, "white homes" sent their kids to school and they got raised to become "white collar" workers, or compliant in "blue collar" work. throughout the 70s many "black homes" were much poorer and so like those in the decades before them, there were guys who made a living through fighting and so there were a lot of great black boxers. of course things are all different now, when white and black homes are generally well off in regards to money, black children are raised in the same manner as white kids before them, go to school and either become a white or blue collar workers. and guess what? now the best fighters generally come from poorer countries!

anyway, every boxer is generally an imitation of either Corbett or Dempsey. If you want to single people out due to their skin colour (which makes you a dickhead) then Jefferies ought to be listed as he was one of the best boxers in history. his loss to Jackson (an average boxer who fought weaker opponents) doesnt really count as he was old, fat, hadnt fought in 6 years and only trained in a couple months for the fight. like many great fighters after him, he did it for the money, lost and went home with his paycheck.

Mike Tysons trainer was white, who basically moulded him to be like Dempsey. Ali was basically Corbett (as was Jack Johnson) and just like Corbett, Ali was a foul mouthed arrogant prick. Although at least Ali didn't claim to be a Gentlemen! A persons skin colour or ethnicity hasnt got a damn thing to do with anything.

Ali got destroyed by a Japanese guy called Inoki, in a fight which was even heavily handicapped in his way. Does that mean "yellow" people are superior to "black" people? today many japanese professional fighters dont have much success, cause guess what, they grow up just like most american kids do these days. grow up

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Anonymous6:12 AM

Inoki was a wrestler idiot, it wasn't a real fight. Ali punched him in the mouth and he went down after that he laid on his back and kicked Ali in the legs. It was ruled a draw. Ali had blood clots and both legs almost required amputation. His agility was gone but he still boxed another 5 years and beat top fighters such as ernie shavers and ken Norton purely on will and heart. Ali is the greatest period in his prime not a man could touch him. Not even god himself.

Even Tyson said Ali would win coa he had heart like no other boxer ever !!!!!

It has a lot more to do with economics, culture, and mind set rather than race. A larger percentage of African Americans (or what ever they're calling themselves these days) gravitate towards sports in the hopes of a big payday. I'm sure there are white guys out there who would have made excellent boxers had they pursued that career path. But when you look at mixed martial arts you see the majority of fighters and champs are not black. Martial arts happens to something a lot of whites get into as a hobby plus usually have a wrestling back ground as well.

Marciano may have been the most succcessful white heavyweight of all time by a number of measures. But sorry as a fighter he would not have stood a chance and against either of the Klitschkos. Remember a good big man always beats a good little man. Rocky for his Louis and 1st Walcot bouts was 184 lbs.?!! Name the last time you saw someone even 200 lbs fighting for the title. If there was guarenteed he was a fast skilled boxer staying away staying a step ahead of the bigger man. Rocky came right at you tried to over power you. He wouldn't have lasted a round with a talented 240lk fighter like either Klitschko, or Tommy Morrison. And I love the guy but lets get real.

It is very interesting that whites seem to be dominating boxing for the last 25 years It's like the pendulum has swung completely. And many of the NBA MVPs are white Maybe this means that blacks will start becoming great chess players or Jeopardy champions. So it's a good thing for everyone. Black and white.
