Goalkeeping is such a position which people seldom praise for. However, it is unavoidable to be criticized if anyone makes any mistake in this position. In this point of view, it may seem to be the less important position in football but if you have a little idea about football then you would be able to realize the significance and the responsibility of this position. You can compare a goalkeeper with the minister on the chess board who initially stands beside the king symbolizing the principle protector of the King in the battle field. In the same way a goalkeeper is also the principle saver of the goal. I found some of the great parsons who seem to be a wall under the goal bar.
If any of you think something to let me now then please feel free to use the comment section.
Lev Yashin
Lev Ivanovich Yashin is thought to be the greatest goalkeeper ever seen in the long history of football. Black Spider nicknamed this Russian goalkeeper has set some unique moments in his career saving some unimaginable goals both for his country and his clubs. He played in three world cups for his country and he could finish 4 out of his 13 world cup matches with clean sheet meaning without conceding any goal. He also helped his national team to won the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Gold Medal. In his entire career he just played in one club Dynamo Moscow and he appeared in 326 club matches in his career. He is the only goalkeeper ever to win European Football of the Year. He had a great skill to save penalty kicks and n his career he did this toughest job for 150 times. Some of his quotes are still famous in the football world. I am quoting some of his quotes from a website:
"What kind of a goalkeeper is the one who is not tormented by the goal he has allowed? He must be tormented! And if he is calm, that means the end. No matter what he had in the past, he has no future."
"The joy of seeing Yuri Gagarin flying in space is only superseded by the joy of a good penalty save."
"There have only been two world-class goalkeepers. One was Lev Yashin, the other was the German boy who played in Manchester — Trautmann."
This greatest performer of world football was awarded the ‘Order of Lenin’ in 1967 and most probably the significant prize to have been given to this excellent warrior under the bar came in 1994 when Fifa introduced Lev Yashin Award for the best goalkeeper of each world cup tournaments.

This magnificent goalkeeper had a clear sense in positioning and he saved some reflex shots which are known to be very hard for a goalkeeper. Most of his club career he spent Leicester City with his 293 appearance for the club. Regarding his one of the best saves deemed to be “The Save of the Century”, I am quoting from a website:
“England played Brazil in the first round and a Jairzinho cross from the right was met perfectly by Pelé who headed it down towards Gordon’s bottom right corner. As the ball hit the ground in front of the goalline, he managed to flick it with his outstreched right hand as it came up. The ball rose over the bar for a corner.”

DeleteNeville Southall is by far the best goalkeeper that has ever played the game. Buffon? Your having a laugh!
Deleteno Campos?
Deleteyou mexican
Deleterl? u dont consider buffon .... hahaha u have no idea then because u just a blinded fan of some national team or some other club... and not a football/soccer fan
Deletewhat aboutb petr cech
DeleteHow is it possible that you can have a top 10 goal keepers of all time and not name Rene Higuita. He changed the way goalkeepers played for ever. His style was ahead of his time. Playing both the field as well as betwwen the post. It a shame that this page would have this and not have some of the greatest goalkeppers of all time. There are many goalkeepers who deserve to be on this page in place of those you have mentioned. Do your research and you will find that soccer's top 10 goalkeepers was a little short handed in this page.
ReplyDeleteRespectfuly,
Victor Hugo Aristizabal

u have to win something... than u can be one of the best... only legends wins world cups.... some of those gks won word cups by holdin the whole opponent team by themeself.... think about it a world cup legend or a circous legend...?!!!! a save or a "style" doesnt make you the best
DeleteI think Aduacto Iglesias should be amoungst those legends.
ReplyDeleteHe played for Real Madrid and also Australia as gaol keeper.
i dont understand howyou compiled this to be a list of greatest goalkeepers when you leave out the best of the lot inshilton you need to go by facts and not judgement then you have keepers like jennings southall pruedomme none of the current keepers like buffon should not even be in top 10 off all time if you had shilton at the age of buffon now in his prime how much would he be worth ?????
ReplyDeletewhat about Jorge Campos? That guy was the best, he even played foward while being goalkeeper at the same time and he actually made a play which ended with a goal!. Nobody mentions him.
ReplyDeleteYeah, great criteria for a goalkeeper, playing forward...and for the best striker what's the criteria?...to play as a goalkeeper?
Deletewhat about the portuguese vitor baia? he is the footballer with more titles ever!
ReplyDeletePat Jennings was better than all of these & should top the list as the greatest ever!
ReplyDeleteAgree
ReplyDeletedont forget petr cech..hes not had a success stury as long as the rest of these guys but hes made an impact in vry little time..
ReplyDeleteWith the winning of the 2010 World Cup no respectable list can go without Iker Casillas. San Iker dethrowned Buffon as the worlds best keeper some time ago.
ReplyDeleteAnd 2008 euro champion
DeleteAnd 2012 euro champion..
Deletehow about kevin tarnate he always have clean sheets.he is not beaten in all of his matches.how come he is not in the ranking??? i think he is the fattest goalkeeper in all time..why not rank the fattest goal keeper of all time???
DeleteSchmeichel for me is the GOAT but Pat Jenning's easily makes a top 10 appearance.
ReplyDeleteNeville Southall
ReplyDeleteits unbelievable that names like Pat Jenings, Walter Zunge and Higuita are not mentioned. who did this rating
ReplyDeleteJulius Iyere
Nigeria
The greatest goalkeeper ever is schemeichel Luv Manchester united!
ReplyDeletewhy is Peter Schmeichel in the English hall of fame he is not English and anyway were is Lee Camp?
ReplyDeletekahn is the greatest
ReplyDeleteOliver Khan is the greatest. He was the greatest before retirement.
Deleteit's true oliver kahn really was and is the greatest one of all time!
DeleteWould of been the greatest...if not German!!
Deleteall keepers make great saves, technically it has be Pat Jennings. Best keeper not to get a game at the '10 world cup-Pepe Reiner. You'll never walk alone.
ReplyDeleteYou didnt even spell Reina right, "you'll never walk alone" my ass.
DeleteHOW CAN YOU DO A TOP 10 GOALKEEPER LIST AND NOT ADD RENE HIGUITA. HE IS AWSOME MAN AND HE CHANGED THE WAY GOALKEEPERS PLAY.
ReplyDeletemissed Gilmar dos Santos Neves, best goalkeeper of all time?
ReplyDeleteYou need to write Taffarel too !
DeletePeter Schmeichel is the best goalkeeper of all time
ReplyDeleteABSOLUTELY, AND WITH ANY KIND OF DOUBT! Schmeichel was and will always be the best!
DeletePerhaps Rene Higuita changed the way goalkeepers play, but he isn't better than Kahn or Buffon or Cech in goalkeeping.
ReplyDeleteCasillas was also good, perhaps he is ranked in top 50 goalkeepers of all time, but not top ten
All another goalkeepers that you've mentioned are in top 50, perhaps some of them are in top 25, but I think Petr Cech and Rinat Dasayev is good enough to reach top ten.
GK talk is useless because it is hard to quantify their success... clean sheets are not enough since most goals are mistakes by the defensive line rather than the keeper... best keepers should be measured by what they helped win... every country thinks they have a best ever Gk but in truth the best is oliver khan... that cesc guy from chelsea is also great but just has the a horrible national team so we don't hear from him
ReplyDeletewhere is the name of the best goalkeeper IKEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRR Casillas????????
ReplyDeleteidiots where is Iker Casilas
ReplyDeletegreat top 10.all those names deserve to be at the top.just dino zoff, for me,is the real number 1.

ReplyDeleteidiots where is Iker Casilas
ReplyDeleteidiots where is Iker Casilas
Julio Ceaser would definitely have to be one of the top 10 ever! No doubt in anyone's mind!
ReplyDeletedida should be on there and definately shilton
ReplyDeletejust want to know why Michel preud'homme not on the list?michel kick peter schmeichel out to no.4 on 1994 worldcup..Peter schmeichel maybe overpraised because he play with manUtd..was benfica or mechelen too far away from manUtd standard?benfica and mechelen also won european title..this rating is TOTALLY BS because Buffon was also on the list yet Buffon still got lots of things to prove because he was still on the pitch.
ReplyDeleteWhere are Rinat Dasaev? Michel Preud homme, Jean Maries Pfaff,
ReplyDeletewheres david seaman?
ReplyDeleteAnyone who actually saw Bert Trautmann play would understand why the likes of Harry Gregg and Sir Bobby Charlton rated him so highly. I have no doubt that he was the greatest-ever.
ReplyDeleteI agree Trautmann should easily be on there
DeleteYes, I saw Bert Trautman play many times, and he is Undoubtably the BEST of the lot. Example -- saw him save a penalty at Bolton afer uncharacteristically going the wrong way; while in mid-flight to his left, he turned his head, saw the ball going to his right, and scissor kicked it away. BLUE 4 Ever
DeleteZoff the best, followed by Buffon enough said

ReplyDeleteIn the documentary I saw about great goalies , it had half the guys listed above including shilton, jennings, casillas, schmeichel & VDS claiming Banks was in class by himself. This list looks off by a few suspects to me but the commenters contribution look dead on...Kahn, Higguita, Shilton, Zoff, Banks, Yashin, VDS, Buffon, Dasaev, Schmeicel.
ReplyDeletelev yashin for life bitxhes!!
ReplyDeleteLev yashin by far read his record it speaks for itself
ReplyDeleteWe want Daphne Vlanti in the top 10!

I hate man utd and am a liverpool fan. But without a doubt the greatest keeper i have ever seen is Schmeichil. No If's or but's. The man was a legend in his own right!
ReplyDeletePat Jennings never got the world acclaim he deserved but was the best of all! Yashin was Next, thomaszewki , shilton and banks were all fantastic.
ReplyDeletewhat about matt mc kenzie or alfred david
ReplyDeleteTAFARELLLLLL!!!
ReplyDeleteNeville Southall is by a million miles the best keeper of all time, not even open for debate. Any top ten goalies list without big nev is a joke.

ReplyDeleteHe is one of the greatest.
Ravelli, Shilton, Gilmar.

.Harald Schumacher
.José Luis Chilavert
.Manuel Bento
.Bruce Grobbelaar

i think that hope solo should be on this page, just because she's a girl, does not mean she should be underestimated. True, she did not save all the balls in the shoot out, but the U.S. was not even expected to make it past the first round, and because of her and abby wambach, we made it to the finals!
ReplyDeletei think Seaman was better than Schmeichel
ReplyDeleteWhat about Tim Howard!!! Put some modern players in
ReplyDeleteGTFO
DeleteYashin,Banks,Southall,Buffon,Filliol,Dasaev,Zoff,
ReplyDeleteSchmeichel,Maier,Casillas.
I am the best goalie of all time.
ReplyDeletewhat about zamora
ReplyDeletePat Jennings should be in the top ten list. A true professional goal keeper and a gentle giant. Spectacular one hand safe and shot an amazing goal. My personal favorite greatest goal keeper at all time !
ReplyDeleteWhat about Wak "The Cat" Hawkins many guess appearances between the jumpers for The Town and Shiplake legend on the pitch, legend off it recentenly made a cameo guess appearance for a charity match and still has remarkably sharp reflexes and a spring in his step
ReplyDeleteAmadeo Carrizo was the inventor of the goalkeeper/field player. Before him, no one would go out from under the three posts.
ReplyDeletein my opinion best keepers ever:
ReplyDeleteiker casillas
lev yashin
oliver kahn
peter schmichael
gigi buffon
harry gregg
dino zoff
claudio taffarel
gordon banks
pat jennings
Nice list, But Peter Shilton, Rene Higuita and Bert Trautman could've been included as well. Also, Buffon could've been excluded as he is still playing. If Buffon is included, so should've been Casillas.
ReplyDeletewhere is Paco Buyo?¿? WTF¿??¿?
ReplyDeletenevile southall should be here, the best i ever seen.
ReplyDeletejorge campos?
ReplyDeleteI love the list. A few honorable mentions:
ReplyDeleteJean Marie Pfaff
Ronnie Hellstrom
Jan van Beveren (the best keeper never to play in the World Cup due to problems with Johann Cruyff.
Lev Yashin is by far the greatest, not just because he was a brilliant keeper, but because he was a great innovator of the game, inventing most common-place goalkeeping tactics that today's keepers such as Cech and Casillas use in every game. He is by far the greatest and deserves to be the greatest
ReplyDeleteyou forgot rene higuita
ReplyDeleteilker casillas???? Wtf, this article says "the best goal keeper ever in the history" !! Taffarel for example or even Seaman, Casillas is a gp plays in a team with a good defence that does not give him a lot of work yet he concedes the hell out of goals in spain and CL
ReplyDeleteWHERE THE FUCK IS IKER CASILLAS????????!!!!! :O
ReplyDeleteBert Williams ............Wolves
ReplyDeletevitor bieir should be in here, i also believe chilavert is the greatest goalkeeper of all time with schmeichel a close second. I dont know why seaman isnt in the mix though, he was between the sticks for arsenals unbeaten run
ReplyDeleteShilton, Cech, Valdes, Duda, Reina, Barthez, Bosnich etc...
iker casillas is a great gk but not a legend yet... legends wins world cups by themself... casillas would never win without xavi and iniesta.... ok boys stop trolling around and learn football and its history...
ReplyDeleteHow come Andoni Zubizarreta and Buffon are in but not Bert Trautmann
ReplyDeleteAre you out of your mind?? Casillas is must definetely be on any top 10 goalkeepers list !!
ReplyDeleteyou should put casillas on top ten goal keeper,,,
ReplyDeleteElisha Scott should be there at number 1
ReplyDeletebuffon best goalkeeper ever i cant change my mind even if i see with my both eyes
ReplyDeleteRene huguria
ReplyDeleteFor Messi, I have to stay conservative manner since 2011 he start to decline in his dribbling performance, too often failure in attempt to get pass players especially in the 2011 Copa America and the 2014 World Cup. In Pele's ambiguous dribbling status in history, he should be among the best whereas the players within a group is very closed in level and it is highly depend on circumstantial advantage. I dare to rate Savicevic higher than Pele in pure dribbling ability because Savicevic get pass defenders by slower speed and extremely dependent of his dribbling accuracy.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, The list of ability ranking is planed to review again after I have finished the current project (Implementation of Positional Hall of Fame)
